Does anybody know if I can ride a jumpseat out of Canada? I've heard that there's something wierd about it. I'm really interested in an offline JS so I can get home faster. Thanks for the help.

Canada J/S

My understanding is that NO you cant J/s because you need to be on the Gendec to customs. We had a DX who tried to fam ride to Canada and got into all sorts of issues... I also heard of a pilot who got into hot water for trying to J/s over the border...

clear skies..

My understanding is that you can jumpseat to Canada in the cabin. It is no longer ok to sit in the actual jumpseat in the cockpit. We can't even sit in the cockpit of our own planes but the cabin is still available. Because in the end a cabin jumpseat is just like being a non-rev

I defer to Scabseeker

Of course you are right... I meant to say Cockpit . In the back have at it.. of course most FOMS now carry the wording "cabin unless nothing is available."

No sir you cant leave 25 mins early because you are feeling sick !!

The above post have some degree of truth however it depends on who you work for. CASS is not an issue since CASS is only for domestic purposes. If your airline has a system set up by which you can "list" yourself for the JS than you can jumpseat ON THE FLIGHT DECK into the US from an international city. If you are jumpseating offline you must sit in the back. If your airline has an agreement with Air Canada you will need to list so the captain has the "ticket" he needs. This, I believe is provided by AC ops to the captain and no one may jumpseat without it.

Thanks for the info, someone PMd me with some good details. Here's what I've found out so far(for the record):

JS is fine(in the back, of course) on or offline.

You have to pay the taxes, around $34 round trip.

You have to get a ticket from the ticket counter (and pay the taxes there) to go through security.

That's it.

I jumpseated on Mesaba to Canada, and Skywest out of Canada in DEC/JAN. No taxes.

Hi!

I JS in/out of Canada with NWA. No taxes. They treat Canada like a domestic destination.

Out of Mexico I've had to pay the taxes (outbound USAir) and not (inbound ATA).

You can usually avoid taxes in/out of Canada. It's not like Europe. You may get dinged by AA, UAL, DAL for the security fee leaving Canada - hopefully you get a dumb agent who won't realize. There's also the Airport Improvement Fee in some CAN cities - another form of taxation up there.

As far as ever sitting in the cockpit (your own carrier) you can thank Osama and our TSA friends. Transport Can has not been as restrictive than the FAA - they control who sits up front flying in/out/over the US. Period. It sucks!
