I recently commuted home on Delta...CVG-LGA. The flight was nearing full so the gate agent had me fill out the jumpseat form just in case. I went out and introduced myself and was welcomed aboard by CA and F/O. After everyone boarded, there were 3 seats in the back...all middle seats.

I'd rather sit up front than in a middle seat of a full flight. When I asked to do this, I got a somewhat silent treatment nod from the CA about sitting in the jumpseat. He seemed better once we got airborne and we had a pleasant chat the whole flight.

I certainly don't mind people sitting up front when there are seats in the back...but the ERJ jumpseat is terribly uncomfortable...so you'd be nuts to choose that over a seat in the back. So is it taboo/unacceptable to request the jumpseat even though there are seats in the back?

I sit where the Captain wants me to sit. Middle seat between two fat people is better than not getting to work or home.

If the Captain doesn't offer the cockpit JS, when there are nothing but middle seats in back, then I assume he would rather not have me up there, and I'll happily go sit in the back.

When I was a Captain, I always offered the cockpit seat. Sometimes it was accepted, sometimes not. Didn't bother me either way.

I jumpseated on a full 767-300 to JAX a couple months ago. The agent said there may be one open seat, and the captain told me their FOM requires non-DL or Comair pilots to take the open seat in the back. Turned out they were full (thank god, rather ride up front on the 76 than in 45E any day).

I wouldn't say taboo or unacceptable, however it is a bit imposing. Most cockpits are cramped the way it is. Now you are asking to sit up front and jam one more body in there when there is no need to.

Most Captains don't care. If you want to sit upfront, I think that would be acceptable. But, there are always a few that would rather have you sit in the back. I haven't seen that much on the 757/767. You are welcome on our jumpseat anytime.

I understand that cockpit is only available when NO other seats are available by TSA decree Ask you're j/s co-ordinator
