Ummm,1900kid,do you work for a company that charges for "jumpseats" , say, Airtran ? Thank your union for that one. Now,I'm sure you're a Big-Boss-Man conservative, like 90% of us,correct ? A "take responsibility for your actions" dude,eh ? So I'm sure you would've went to the bumped pax and explained "Gee,I'm so sorry you won't make your (son's funeral, kid's graduation, job interview, etc.) but it's more important for me to get home than you, even though you bought a ticket, even though I don't even work for this airline, because my union says and I agree this is the right thing to do".You don't have a hair on your a$$ if you don't.Good for the company, was it ? Maybe.Good for the person who pays the bills ? Ab-so-lutely.

So when you are p.s. to a deadhead or training event, and the flight is oversold, do you go appologise to those left behind? I mean, they are all attending funerals, weddings, graduations and such.

Huh ? I would take the jumpseat so a revenue pax does not get left at the gate-see,one of me in j.s.=one more rev pax in back, get it ? If the company overbooks the flight by 5,I can't do anything about that, but if it's over by one,I can.Math is hard for you, isn't it ?

At CHQ we take a seat in the back. Under no circumstances can the company make us sit in the jumpseat. I'm sorry you got screwed by one of our own.
With that said; I have sat in the jumpseat while being Positive spaced if it helps get another passenger on AND the Capt/FO are cool with me sitting up front. BUT!! ---->Under no Circumstances will I take the JS while being PS if there is another pilot commuting home or to work. PERIOD!!
Positive space means, I get a sit in the back. I'm sorry that the airlines over-book flights by 10%-15%, that doesn't mean that I'm going to screw another pilot out of the jumpseat. Hopefully the Captains will start enforcing that as well.

I'm sincerely glad this is being debated. There are CA's at QX that don't realize that the company's policy of DH'ing FO's being assigned to the JS is just another example of management seeking to usurp the discretion of the CA over his/her JS.

There are good JS traditions that ought to be preserved. QX management has gone a long way in eroding those traditions, including specifying that JSers who get a seat in the back are not to check in with the CA.

Control over the JS needs to stay firmly in the grasp of the CA. I fear it's slipping away at many airlines.

It's amazing how many people on here don't understand what the jumpseat is. It belongs to us, not the company. It is for us to use to get to work, to get home, to take a trip for any reason at all. It has been negotiated and PAID FOR by us.

Do you folks think the company hasn't put a specific value on the jumpseat in negotiations? You'd better believe they have, right down to the dollar. We paid for it, and we own it. If you believe anything else, you're stupid and wrong.

I love our passengers. They're the people responsible for me getting my paycheck. I will let them use my cell phone to contact their Doctor in upstate NY after a long flight from India where they don't understand our pay phone. I'll happily stop and answer their questions, I'll even escort them if need be. (Like I did with a drunk NWA pax once who wasn't going to find his gate without my help.) I've even driven a couple to their hotel at the hub when we got in way late after a WX divert and the shuttle wasn't running.

I draw the line however, when it comes to giving up hard-won contractual benefits. Will I ride up front on CAL to get a revenue passenger on the jet? Hell no, and shame on you for asking. I don't want to lose circulation and remain awake on the jumpseat, I'd rather sleep and attempt to relax in MY seat. DH'ing crew is part of the cost of doing business. There's a reason you're positive space, and you getting in position to operate a revenue flight is much more important than Aunt Tilly getting to the state fair.

THE JUMPSEAT IS THERE FOR THE BENEFIT OF US AND OUR FELLOW AVIATORS. IT IS NOT THERE FOR THE COMPANY OR OUR CUSTOMERS, THAT'S WHAT THE BACK OF THE AIRPLANE EXISTS FOR.

I apologize for my less than civil tone, but some of you foks need to pull your heads out of your rear ends and smell the coffee.

No, of course not:

THE AIRLINE OVERSOLD THE FLIGHT NOT US! If the passenger misses the wedding, funeral whatever, it's because the revenue management folks are not doing their job.

THE JUMPSEAT BELONGS TO US!!!!!

Some of you are missing the point. The jumpseat is NOT for company buisiness. Even if it would bump revenue passengers. If the company needs to get a pilot somewhere they need to positive space them in the cabin.

One of the very important reasons for this is to force the company to build better pairings.

Also to leave the jumpseat open for the crewmembers that need it to get to work or home.

Dont screw your fellow pilots and reward the company for poor planning.

Amen, brother
