A pilot was hauled off a jumbo jet by police and failed a breath test as he was about to fly with 350 passengers on board.

The 51-year-old pilot was found to be over the limit to fly the Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 747 from Manchester to Lahore.

He was arrested and held in custody by police at Manchester Airport.

Passengers on the flight, due to take off at 10.40am on Saturday, had to wait on the tarmac until a relief pilot was found.

The flight eventually took off 90 minutes later.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed a pilot, from Pakistan, had been arrested for being over the legal limit for flying a plane.

He was bailed to attend a police station on March 24 while officers make further inquiries.

The legal limit for flying a plane is 20 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood - one quarter the legal limit for driving a car at 80mg.

The Civil Aviation Authority, which regulates British airlines, recommends all flight crew do not drink at least eight hours before reporting for duty.

Pakistan International Airlines, whose advertising claims 'Great People to Fly With', also operates UK flights from Birmingham and Heathrow. No-one from the firm was available for comment.

Muslims dont drink .. so the result of the investigation should be interesting.

I was on an EgyptAir flight once and we had to pick up the free alcohol in the jet way. They wouldn't serve it on the plane.

Off topic -- where the airworthiness cert is supposed to be, there was a small copy of the Koran. Oh yah, also we had an all male crew. Last time I flew with them. Sheesh!! no women ..
