SPECIAL MEC UPDATE
We have learned that Dr. Joe Battersby passed away last night. Joe served as an Aviation Medical Examiner to several hundred AWA and other pilots who lived in the Phoenix area.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe, his family and his loyal staff who served us all extremely well over the years. When we get more information, we will pass it along. AWA MEC

One of the few remaining aviation characters has flown West.

Godspeed "Smokin'" Joe, you'll be missed.

I've got 6 medicals signed by that old timer! God bless him and his wife! The end of an era.. all the good old docs are passing on in Phoenix.

I'd never forget my first medical with him... first thing he does is take out a cigarette and offer me a smoke.. then we get down to the important part.. rumors and latest industry news..

I went to battersby years ago, I asked him about the girls in garter belts and hose drapped across the T6,s and stearmans in his office. He said "Son I want to teach you a life lesson, when a gal weighs 110 pounds and has boobs that big she either bought them or they were a gift, now remember that" He was one of a kind.

Battersby ruled. Sorry to hear that. I know he was struggling with his health in recent years. Great guy. So many pilots in Phoenix and abroad used to go to him. He will be missed.
