Canadian job opportunities

Always nice to see such an educated, civilized reply . . . ..

I'm not quite sure how to take that. I heard that Canadian pilots with Canadian certificates have opportunities to get hired at the commuters, e.g. Jazz, earlier than their counterparts here. That's why I made my statement.

Several years ago I checked into possibilities with Canadian commuters, i.e. Air BC. Maybe Air Ontario as well. During my radio career I investigated working for radio stations up there. I recall that in both instances I was told that Canadian citizens are taken before other nationals.

Some of these banner-towing schemes are hazardous. You have to pay for your training. Then, there's no guarantee of work. Just be careful.

Sorry about that, it wasn't meant for you.

As for working for Jazz or Air BC, they ask a minimum of 5000hrs and a type rating, way out of my league. Although I hadn't heard about the 'preference' for Canadians, I'm betting it's more a legal / licensing issue than a 'Canada is for Canadians' one.

Anway, I'm still starting out hence the question on this board. Thanks for the genuine reply and the warning about towing companies.

I second the reply about Tim Pacini at Aerial Messages... numerous horror stories there (both witnessed and heard). Do yourself a favor and stay away, your check book will thank u.

I received this in my 99s E-mail list regarding jobs with Aerial Messages, Inc:

"I am writing this to warn all of you about the this scam. The man who owns aerial messages inc is a con man. He scammed me out of 2500.00. I later found out he had done the same to a number of other people. This man presents himself as a religious person out to help young aspiring pilots. His offer sounds great. $2500.00 for banner tow training and an endorsment, and then a job flying for him. He states that flight time is abundant and advertises that many of his pilots get burnt out they fly so much. What he really does is take your $2500.00, put you in the care of one of his two or three real pilots, and you tag along for a few hours until they feel like you pretty much have the basics of banner towing and they sign you off. They are not cfi's, and the far's do not require that a cfi give you a banner towing endorsment.!

Consider this when you read about the accident one of his airplanes was in last summer that killed one of his full time pilots and a young man trying to get his banner tow endorsment. In my case, he provided no training whatsoever and refused me a refund. Legal action is difficult because his company is incorporated. Bottom line, I know low time pilots such as myself are eager to get a job and build time, but this is not how to do it."

Did not we have alot of US pilots going to Canada in the early 40's to get flying jobs over in Europe? It is only fair to let them come done here.

It's not just Citizenship, it's also resident versus non-resident preferences for jobs up yonder.

Lockhart Air in Ontario has a good rep and needs at least a Class 3 IP, along with several other schools in the Providence. It's the same in California, most of the schools are gearing up for Spring and Summer training.

A CFI certificate, FAA or otherwise, will do you far more good than a training run with a banner tow place -- especially now that aerial banner towing is becoming almost impossible.

Coming from Canada and I was wondering how good / bad / ugly the industry is at the moment in the US, California in particular.
Are there any jobs out there for low-timers like myself? Or would getting your CFI be the better route to go?

Look dumbsh%t, why dont you correct and worry about your own spelling before you go and try to correct me. On a side note selection rates for OCS and OTS for flying slots are running less than 20% for the people that actually make it to the selection boards. This does not include all the pogues that get DQ'ed for medical reasons and such. Ya, the military must be in sad shape to select me. Bwahahahaha.

Me Arrogant? No not really, well maybe a little. A little cocky, yes. But I can back it up. I have already posted several times my college wrestling accolades on this board which Im very proud of. It has given me all the confidence in the world to tackle life head on balls to the wall. No one on this board can even comprehend how hard we trained day in day out.

I stick by my statement, people from Canada need to stay in Canada and find jobs. American jobs are for American citizens. Thank You!

I have to agree with staying in Canada. How many furgloughed Americian pilots do you think could get an interview, or even hired at a Canadain airline. It goes without saying that this applies to all countries. As americains, it is sad that the white americain male has the biggest disadvantage in aviation. There is no room for fair hiring practices or even equal rights when it comes to the safety of flight, the most qualified is the best person for the job. Imagine if the politicians or president were selected this way.

On a second note, pay your dues regardless where you are from, with 250 hours you don't know squat, even if you think you do. Take the time to instruct, you will learn more in 1-2 years of instructing (especially Multi) then you could ever imagine. To be a professional takes time. Why do new comers to aviation think they can buy their way into the field, do you think Koby Bryant of the Lakers would be as good if he only had the applity to pay.
