Saw this in trade-a-plane.....

SWORDFISH SPOTTER PILOT WANTED... Pilot with high-wing airplane [ie.150,152] needed to spot swordfish around Avalon, Catalina Island, California during May thru October, mostly weekends with some midweek flying depending on weather. Pilot will receive 35% of the catch, Pilot also takes care of all fuel and aircraft costs. Helps if Pilot likes fishing and flying over water, will train Pilot to find and spot Swordfish if necessary. If interested contact (310) 510-2611.

Dude, I spotted dolphins from 500 ft dangling from a parachute behind a boat...and it's a heck of a lot cheaper and safer than flying low and slow way off shore.

so what does that leave you out of the 35%?

Subtract out

Fuel
Insurance
Aircraft
Ramp Fees
Runway Fees
Taxiway Fees
Air Fees
FICA
Self Employment tax
other employment tax
overhead
extraneous overhead
underhead
levelhead

...about -14% profit

Are they gonna show up with 600 lbs of swordfish or sell it on your behalf. ? I know that this may be a raw deal, but has anyone done any fishpotting before? How'd you like it, out of curiosity.....

Get paid 35% of catch????

Does the FBO accept a hunk of swordfish for payment?

I'll have to see if my landlord will accept a hunk of swordfish for rent.

Next time I put gas in my car, I'll see if the Texaco station takes a hunk of swordfish.

Sounds like BS.
Money talks.......swordfish.........

By all means I'm not a tree hugger after all I shoot ducks and deer for fun, but I wouldn't do it for a 100% of the catch.

Billfish should never be on a menu, I don't care who ya are.

Just my opinion, I understand some of you have mouths to feed, flame away.

Don't know about spotting for Swordfish, but fish spotting for a commercial fleet can be very lucrative (70-80K for 1 good sighting and catch). It is also very dangerous due to other acft at low altitudes with the pilots all looking down!

I took the job, here is my ad:

In the fishing industry most employees are paid a percentage of the catch. No this does not mean you get a trunkful of fish. The fish are sold to a wholesaler and the proceeds are split among the vessel owner, skipper, crew, and in this case the spotter.

Could be a fun business if you had a single engine that was cheap to operate. Too bad I sold my Luscombe! You'd want to buy some safety gear. If you ended up having to ditch you wouldn't be in the water very long. Lots of commercial and pleasure boats out there during the season. A handheld marine VHF would provide you with aircraft to boat comm.
