Job Fair

I have plans attendeing the DCA job fair in September.

Since I never attended on of these events (Never thought I would have to, silly me) any information about what to bring, what to expect etc. would be appreciated.

When you go to the Job Fair, bring updated resumes and dress up. Wear comfortable shoes. Pretty obvious.

Be prepared to stand in lines. They are long. If you are furloughed from a major, from my experience at the June Job fair, most commuters don't want to talk to you. A friend talk to Comair and he stated they would not even look at him.

JetBlue was willing to talk to you. By giving your resume to them at the job fair by no account will get you an interview. They have made this very clear. They have their computer do the work.

ATA did not hand out applications at the Job Fair. They will take your resume though.

SWA will talk to you and give you their projections. In order to apply have to wait for their website to come up and running again.

FEDEX was at the June Fair and they basically stated they did not have any information on hiring.

World attended, but they were late. At the time they stated they did not plan on hiring.

AirTran also attended. They had a very long line. About an hour late, as they are the ones hiring the most. They stated in June they wanted 500 of PIC 121 time but to be competitive needed 1000 PIC 121. They looked over resumes and took the ones that met their minimums.

The job fair is ok. Can meet with recruiters and get your name out their, but that is it.

However, they allowed a 3X5 card with your name and application number.

It always amazes me when companies attend a career fair with no intentions of hiring. Why bother setting up a display and allocating manpower? It makes no sense to me.

As I said elsewhere, it costs them basically nothing, it takes very little time, they get to meet other recruiters, they get information from Kit, and they make a small spiel on their airlines projected hiring or lack thereof.

See you look at it as a hiring deal and they look at it as a seminar on the industry.

What information from Kit Darby could possibly be of any benefit to anyone?

Kit just proves P. T. Barnum's axiom on a daily basis and several other old saws as well such as, " Never give a sucker an even break," and " A fool and his money are soon parted."

Kit works hard compiling a good deal of information from airlines that HR and others find helpful.

Now I will not go down as any fan of his, but, the fact is he compiles a good deal of info that is available to you if you want to go out and find it. He condences and prints it and you can buy it if you want and not do all that other work.

Like everything else in this, if you do have the funds and want to take an easier path, maybe you get it from him. I refuse to buy into this he takes advantage of the poor unemployed pilot.
