Don't think that it was Jimmy.... I had heard that the Hemisphere Dancer had been sold to Universal to be part of a set that they were building.....
 
I just saw him land a couple of hours ago, at 1930 or so central time in his Falcon 50.
 
It wasn't Jimmy's...Jimmy sold out and whored his plane to Universal Studios. That airplane is the same kind however, an HU-16 short wing...it was called "Buccaneer"spelled "Buccanaer"...You might have seen it at Sun-n-Fun. It was owned by a British fellow that kept it there off and on.
It's a shame....hope the other two are ok.
 
According to the Margaritaville web site, the Hemisphere Dancer is on a "sabatical" parked at Margaritaville at Universal Studios and will be able to be pulled out and flown again in the future - so I'm not sure if it is "sold". I guess the operating expenses were pretty steap. I think the H. D. will be open for tours (at a cost). Will let you know after NBAA as we intend to check it out while we are there. You got hand it to Jimmy, he sure knows how to make a buck.

You guys about gave me a heart attack. It is true Jimmy's airplane is at the City Walk in Orlando outside the Margaritaville there. It is now the center piece of the Lone Palm Airport Bar. It is a shame to see another Albatross go down, it is from personal experience, an airplane that doesn't fly well on one engine at all. So if they had engine problems, that would explain why they couldn't keep it flying. Fly Safe.
 
I work at Fort Pierce and saw the Buccanaer take off just before the disaster. For the life of me I can't understand a few things. Why on earth the pilot turned back to the airport after losing the engine on take off, Land in the Ocean, its a sea plane, if not the ocean at least indian River. its big enough to support an Albatros. Also, the pilot didn't declare an emergency, and he also declined a runway that he was closer to then the one he was trying to land on. I know it is easy to sit here at my computer and say these things, but it seems to me like the pilot was trying to make it back to the airport to save himself some money. Fort Pierce is where that Albatros is based, maintenance, the hassle of fixing an airplane in the ocean, etc..

From a friend of mine with an Albatross: If it is fully loaded with fuel and passengers, it will not float.

About a week ago I stumbled across this and thought it sounded like a cool operation. Then had a weird feeling that I recognized the plane from somewhere.

Well no wonder...celebrities I grew up with are dropping like flies (Charles Bronson, John Ritter, Robert Palmer, Gordon Jump, etc.). I was afraid Jimmy was next!

By the way, I don't know if any of you were aware that Matt Jeffries died a little while back. He was quite an accomplished aviation artist, but perhaps more importantly, he was the man responsible for much of James Kirk's NCC-1701 Enterprise.

He will be missed...

Who cares if the thing would have floated? Lives were at stake. In fact one died another lost both legs. At least if he would have landed in the water everyone on board could have walked away or swimmed away.
