JFK Lead-in lights, visual or Instrument??

Thanks for the LDIN info. Since DMHLY is the MAP, if you only see LDIN would a missed not be required at DMHYL?

The short answer is YES. You may continue the apporach without going missed at DMYHL if you have the LDIN lights in sight by the time you reach DMYHL. The MAP instructions on the NOS plate indicate that the missed approach may be initiated AT OR BEYOND DMYHL. This allows one to continue beyond DMYHL with only the LDIN lights at MDA without going missed.



As you approach DMYHL off the 041 radial from Canarsie, you have 2 options at this point.

1) If you reach DMYHL and the LDIN lights are NOT acquired, you execute the published MAP.

2) If you reach DMYHL and the LDIN lights are visible, you track the LDIN lights visually at MDA (800') towards either 13L or 13R. Regardless of whether the runway is insight or not at DMYHL, you must STILL track over the LDIN lights.




While tracking the LDIN lights via a visual ground track at MDA, 4 things can happen:

1) While following the LDIN lights to the runway you lose sight of the LDIN lights. This requires you to immediately execute the MAP.

2) While following the LDIN lights to the runway you acquire the runway environment but the flight visibility is less than 2 miles. This requires you to immediately execute the MAP.

3) While following the LDIN lights to the runway you acquire the runway environment and the flight visibility is at least 2 miles, but you aren't able to descend and land within the touchdown zone using normal maneuvers. This requires you to immediately execute the MAP.

4) While following the LDIN lights to the runway you acquire the runway environment and the flight visibility is at least 2 miles. You may begin descent out of MDA and land. Since this approach requires at least 2 miles of visibility, the pilot should be able to descend down in time from 800' when 2 miles out.
