US low-cost carrier JetBlue Airways today revealed plans to offload six Embraer 190s by the end of the first quarter 2009.
The carrier has reached an agreement to lease two E-190s to Brazilian start-up Azul, which is spearheaded by JetBlue founder David Neeleman.
One E-190 has already been delivered to Azul "and one is soon to be delivered by the end of 2008", said JetBlue CFO Ed Barnes this morning at the Calyon Securities Airline Conference.
Additionally, JetBlue intends to sell four future E-190 deliveries to Jetscape in the first quarter of 2009. Jetscape will subsequently lease these four aircraft to Azul, says Barnes.
"It was the gameplan coming into 2009 to continue to slow our growth. We wanted to do that through deferrals," says Barnes, noting, however, that the agreement with Azul "was helpful". He assures that JetBlue is "very pleased" with the performance of its E-190s.
To date, JetBlue has deferred delivery of over 100 aircraft, and announced the sale of 18 Airbus A320s. The company's 2009 capacity plan calls for four net E-190s and one net A320.
Azul also has 36 E-195s on order with Embraer, with options for 20 and purchase rights for a further 20.

Can Azul trade some hot Brazilian flight attendants in return? That would be a good trade.

The way things are going in this country, I might trade myself down there. I could learn portuguese and attend Carnival on a regular basis.

What's the impact on the pilots flying the 190 there if any at all?

Still four additional E-190's and one A-320 next year, but the down turn in the economy could change that tomorrow.

Whats the reasoning by leasing out your new planes, and still getting new planes? JetBlue going to move to become a leasing company?

Just curious to the benefits of what they are doing.

JB getting 200k per month per plane and making nearly 5 million per delivery slot due to the deal we got for being launch customer.

After deferrals and 2 leases we will net 4 190's and 1 320 next year.

It's called the Dave Neeleman Azul JB Debt Ratio Bailout and Interest Rate Plan of 2008. Congress passed it.

As for no impact to the 190 bubbas -- ballsy statement there.

DID YA THINK WE WOULD EVER SELL 190s? WELL STAND THE F--K BY.

Wouldn't revenue generated by keeping the plane be more than 200k per month?

If you keep asking questions like that, you'll never make it in management, Surf.

Now, back to your cubicle! ;) TC

What seniority is the most junior Captain at JB? I turned down a job at JB in Nov 2006 and just curious where I would be on the list there.

Thanks!

On what airplane?

320 -- I think, emphasize think, it is Jan/Feb 2005.
190 -- I got hired in 2005. I could have been a CA in January.
