From an inside B6 source, it was the "aisle donkeys" (his words) that deployed the masks, not the flight crew.
 
Agreed you don't want to feed O2 to a fire. Nobrainer. However, the smoke came from an engine fire and due to an engine grenading. They was no cabin fire to feed.
The cabin crew still shouldn't have dropped them (manually, I'm told, with the PSU tool), but in this case it caused no harm.
