So, I'm updating my Jepps last night. Ripping out the 17 pages of "Chart Notams" that I never read from the front and replacing them with 17 new pages that I know I won't read. Does anybody ever read these? They're organized by city. Doesn't seem to be a format very useful for cross country planning. Opinions?

Yes. I always review them on a trip-by-trip basis. Some stuff is trivial, some changes are higher MDA's, etc., could be pretty important!

Although, if you read them once, just skim through with the old notams compared to the new ones you just entered, you won't see many changes.

Yes, it is important to read them. What I do is after flight planning (or letting the software flight plan) do I skim over the NOTAMS to see anything that is on my route.

There is a good reason why Jepps sends you updates once every 2 weeks .. or less sometimes. They don't want you to DIE. :) Take NOTAMs seriously.

since both the charts and notams are sent every two weeks, wouldn't you think a new chart with the new MDA would also be issued?

No. Think NAV problems or temporary cranes, etc. Higher minimums for the short term do not necessitate a procedural change.

well in the 121 world they should then be on your release.

I love chart Notams. I memorize them every two weeks. I can't count how many times I've changed my flight plan based on the jepp chart notams. In fact, I love them so much I keep a special binder by my bed. It's all chart notams published during the last 11 years. Being a professional pilot, I like to not only know current chart notams but the *history* of ALL chart notams. They are fundemental to my existance. Santa is going to bring my 8 year old a rare set of 11/22/98 chart notams for Christmas...I can't wait to see his little face on Christmas morning!!! Happy Holidays.

Ferlo,

Thats hilarious man. I got my 10 year old nephew some old L-charts and $hit, but he asked for an Alaska update from 92. Santa couldnt find one of those, so he gets a 1999 FAR/AIM instead. He's learnin up that $hiznit real quick.

Is it really necessary to start a thread about friggin chart notams? Either read them or dont, you know what your responsible for.
