Quality of life and pay are linked. I work more (thus decreasing my qol) because the pay is low. That's why premium pay is such a scam for example. "Work more and we'll pay you more" the company says. Premium pay is a direct contradiction of quality of life. The fact that I think about PTO-ing a trip or not because I may lose that time and a half is redicerous.

If I was on second year pay at swa for example, I could work less for the same pay that I would be getting on a 90 hour, second year 320 FO line. That's what qol is all about.

I used to believe in premium pay before I got here, but not so anymore.

When's your 737 type ride? Sometimes you have to take 1 step back to take 3 steps forward.

Thats it in a nutshell. JetBlue will either fix the pay and benefits problem, or operate a revolving door for pilots who leave for other carriers.

I haven't been here that long, but so far I love it. I hope the leadership is taking this problem seriously and will change things for the better when the timing is correct for the company as a whole. I have no desire to get a pay raise just to watch us post losses again.

Agree.

First year pay at Continental in $29/hr from a previos post. Second year pay changes considerably depending on which aircraft you are on. Pay rates for all airlines are on www.airlinepilotpay.com so aleviate any myths you read on this board. CO particpates with the B-plan for all new hires which is considerable based on pay and years of service. Additional ammounts which are smaller are on-time bonuses, and JD Power Awards, perfect attendance etc. Some new-hires this year based on flying could make about $35,000, which could be better but after year one hopefully you will do better. There are a lot of opportunities to move to larger aircraft which is higher. If you were an RJ CA before CAL, by year 2 your pay is back on track and over your career year 1 pay is a mere blip on your overall pay. At Continental you are typed on ever airctaft you fly so that is worth something as well. It's a great place to be despite conversation on this board about year 1 pay.

How much is the JD Power Awards bonus?? I didn't know CAL gave a bonus for that. The perfect attendance bonus amounts to a couple of fee waived pass travel tickets which should be free to begin with. I'm not sure I would include that in a bonus plan. Other than that, I do agree with the rest of your post. You also have to factor in NO health benefits for six months at CAL vs. benefits basically from day 1 at JBLU. My Cobra fees to go to CAL would be north of $600 to keep my current benefits and at JBLU it would cost me an additional $0 to have benefits. In the long run CAL is the better place to go if you look only at career earnings and retirement. I've worked at XJT for over 6 years and I know what the moral and culture is like at CAL and I think I would rather be working at JBLU.

Definately agree on all counts.

JD Power was $65.

Also CO offers extended medical through CO Benefits until regular benefits take over. The number you had seemed high unless you had a large family. Additionally CO Medical Clinics are always free to co-workers if needed.

Have a great time out there, there were 2 pilots in my class from your company. Both great places to be. Have fun both cultures very similar and certainly alive and well. Neither company would be winning awards for service and performance if the workforce was not energized and enjoying coming to work.

Yeah, I think there are lots of other guys like you thinking the same thing. That is why I predict 190 upgrades for guys getting hired now to be around 2 years. Just about the time our 14-15 months would come up, the fence comes down and the 320 FO floodgates open and you are stuck as a 190 FO for lots of months. I couldn't live with that and be happy, so I'm waiting for a 320 date and will bid 190 CA after my 2 years on the 320 and when I can hold a line as a 190 CA. I will then hang out there until the 320 CA life looks good for me. JBLU has a quandry here that they will need to deal with and I'm sure they will do a great job fixing the problem. I'm not worried about them fixing the problem nor am I worried about them succeeding as a great airline to work for. I apologize to all for starting this mess, but maybe some people will feel better after they get it all out in the open. :)

Very smart post....

BTW, I'm thinking of taking SWA off my profile and putting "Canadian"

Can't we all just get along??

Funny you mention that. A buddy of mine left class there to come over here.

In 30 years well know who was right.

If you have a family it is not feasable to run your three month old over to the medical clinic in terminal C. It might work for a single guy or gal who gets the occassional cold, but most people have families and the medical clinic gig just doesn't work for that. My Cobra costs to keep my current XJT benefits for my family would be closer to $700 per month. I know that for a fact because I've checked. I could find comparable medical benefits in the open market for around $600. The extended medical costs are just about as high as COBRA. I'm a little sour on CAL because of the way they have treated XJT employees over the past six years. They have done nothing but smack us around when we were originally hired by a "division" of CAL. Almost all XJT pilots have done outstanding jobs to please CAL customers and a few years back 100% of us would have gone to war for CAL. The only reason why most of us would consider CAL now is because they have destroyed our current company. I've seen CAL management show a disrespect for employees over and over again and would rather work for a management team like Dave and Dave. I doubt you will ever see Kellner work a turn as an FA, work at a customer service desk for a day, or go out and drive a tug all over JFK in the rain to find a fuel truck to fuel up an airplane. Kellner would run and hide in is downtown penthouse that is paid for by CAL and then ask hardworking employees for givebacks when CAL doesn't do so hot so he can get his mulit-million dollar paycheck at the end of the year. CAL is a great place, but I wish all newhires the best of luck the next few years. I would rather be at JBLU working for guys who care about employees when times are bad and living in a place other than EWR, IAH, or CLE.

COEX ROCKS! If you did not have a good time there you were missing out on a lot. Great folks to work with and a lot of fun. Have fun and keep positive!

I am having a great time at XJT and they have been a great place to work for the past six years. I think JBLU will be better than XJT and I think JBLU will be better than CAL for me and my family. Don't get me wrong, I think CAL is a great place and I would work there. It is absolutely a better place to work if you are looking at career earnings and retirement. I guess I'm a littler weird because to me my next move is based on making around 150K and living in a place that me and my family will enjoy. I could make 150K at CAL but I would have to live in places I don't enjoy or deal with a horrible commute. With JBLU I get good pay and can live where I want to live. Everything else aside, I still think JBLU will have a better culture and be a more enjoyable place to spend the next 30 years. I guess we'll see in about 30 years! I guess I should stop hijacking my own thread :)
