Retirements are pouring out the door at United right now. it used to be something you noticed happening, I guess because people cared more. Now they just leave.
 
The situation in Japan as far as pilot shortages is dire.

Then perhaps they should realize that flying an airliner is not an Apollo mission and doesn't require similar medical standards.

You won't see any changes on medical standards..., won't happen..! Most likely they will just offer another expat pilot contract at JAL and increase the T&C's to attract suitable pilots.
