Well its TAX time... and this is the first time i wont be using H&R Block. Just wondering if people do the traditional paper filing or if you do the E-File. I was on the IRS website briefly and saw something about a $29.95 fee for the online filing. I might have clicked on the wrong thing, but just curious how people file their State and Federal Taxes.

TurboTax. The first time is a pain because of all the entries, but after that, all data is imported from last years and it takes about 30 minutes or so to complete and e-file (both Fed and State). Returns in 4-6 weeks.

TurboTax's tax-on-the-web (available at www.turbotax.com) is really great. For $19.95 it walks you throught the process step by step, making tax preparation extremely easy. Plus the fee includes e-filing. Couldn't be any easier or better. (State-tax preparation/e-filing is an extra $9.95.)

BTW, if you're getting a refund, use the direct deposit option--I e-filed my taxes on a Sunday and had my refund credited to my checking account five days later.

The TurboTax with the direct deposit sounds pretty good. However does it make a difference if your bank account is in a different State thats printed on your W-2? Will it still be accepted?

I used one last year called Tax Act. I found it on the web. It was 19.95 and included one e-file. I like it better than TurboTax, but that is just my opinion. All the IRS is concerned with for the direct deposit is the routing number and account number. Other than that, they don't care if your bank is in Alaska and you live in Florida.

I'm close to empenage's age, and I know a lot of people who have been audited.

I use a CPA with a law degree. Tax law.

another vote for TurboTax.com
pretty cheap, they import data from last year and some of the W-2s as well
and the direct deposit option is very cool too
I got my refund in a week, state taxes took a little longer, because in my state, they can't do direct deposit for state taxes

Call me cheap

I refuse to pay a fee to pay taxes. It just goes against every fiber of my being to do that.

I use pen and paper as I want to make it as diffcult and expensive for the gov't as I can. Maybe when the tax code is reformed to one that is easy for the common man and makes sense, I'll change my mind, but as it is, I want the gov't to work as hard as possible for my money. Since I am singlehandedly utlizing so many gov't resources, there won't be as many available for audits.

You guys can thank me later.

Just out of curiosity, where do you think the government gets its money?

Of the month??

I thought that this was a spin off from the "women" thread.
Alls I know is Im not paying any taxes, Im getting a refund.;)

yeah great!!

My wife doesn't really know how the tax system works, I mean that she has absolutely no clue!!
In her opinion, if my employer ended up taking in $15000.- at the end of the year, but after filing we get $100.- back, we are ahead......

Just great, especially since I'm in problems enouh with my big student loan and tax deductible interest payments...

I have explained it to her numerous times, but she just doesn't get it. Are there any tax courses that people can take? I'd just be nice if I didn't have to explain everything a few times EVERY year.

I have been audited three times, not bad for 29. They never found a thing, partly because I document everything expense-wise. Oh yeah, it was two years in a row then a one year break before the next one, borderline harassment if you ask me.

I agree with TB, use a CPA with a law degree, they'll save your bacon. (theyve saved mine).
