I've been looking for island flying jobs in the Bahamas, Hawaii, and U.S. Virgin Islands.

In Hawaii, there are firms that will hire people, but it is P-F-T and sounds like a scam to generate cash flow for the airline and would cost far more than just buying block time and logging hours locally.

I've found a place in the Virgin Islands, but they don't seem to return phone calls.

Anyone have contacts or experiences with any good island hopping places? Please drop me a private message if you do.

You may want to check out Samoa Air. They fly Twin Otters down in American Samoa. As far as I know, they're not PFT.
I don't know their address, but I'm sure you can pull it off the Net or something..

As for scams here in Hawaii, forget Pacific Wings and Trans Air. Both are scam outfits, and especially Trans Air since you pay them $10,000 to sit in the right seat of a SD360. It just amazes me the number of fools they find to fill that right seat. Come here with time, and you'll see a different picture.

Yes, Pacific Wings was one the one from Hawaii I had spoken with. I could find a much better way to spend $10,000, and that is in addition to PAYING for their training class.
 
Don't know about Hawaii, but I flew a little bit in the Caribbean. I also faxed a lot of resumes and never got a response. The best approach--albiet not the cheapest--is to go down to SJU with a stack of resumes. It's kinda like Alaska--if you show up at the beginning of their busy season (@ October for the islands) and are qualified you can get a job. I was there 3 years ago, though, don't know about now.
Another thing is that most will require an ATP, because its sched 135 twins. Still, you might be able to find some FO stuff. Four Star Air Cargo off ST. Thomas flies DC-3, Tolair out of SJU does too, but when I was there they were a little shady. Or you could be an FO on a Trislander for Veiques Air Link.
Whatever you choose, be prepared to do the interview and training in "island time." Things often happen VERY slow and its easy to get frustrated. Don't--just enjoy the sunshine. I went down on a lark for the winter and ended up having a great time.
Do some searching on the internet and make a few calls. Check on www.raa.org and see which members have island addresses. If you need a vacation, take a trip down and scout things out. Good luck and have fun.

You might want to check out Seaborne Airlines in St.Croix. They fly Twin Otters on floats and are looking at adding several aircraft. Good Luck.

If you wanna fly 172s there part 135 VFR, check out www.fly-hawaii.com. He prefers CFIs but might take someonewith VFR 135 mins. The owner can be difficult to get along with at times, but if you really want to go to hawaii, check it out. He used to be affiliated with Sportys, but I guess not anymore.

I wouldn't wish Phil on ANYONE. Besides, he obviously wants multi time. He ain't getting any at Phil's Flying Circus. :)

Latest and greatest about the merger...

They're expecting to complete it on or short after April 12.
Hawaiian and Aloha pilot groups are going through the merger process. From my understanding, HAL ALPA paid out a lump sum for the arbitrator, and ALO pilots are being assessed $250/month for 150 days. That's a lot of Happy Meals per month being tossed away.

As for Island Air, we will stay the same.. Seems like the relationship will be very similar to AA/AE - both owned by AMR, 2 different seniority lists. We're gonna be feeding Hawaiian or whatever the new airline will be called. We most likely won't be furloughing any pilots, but we also won't be running classes this year either, but who knows.. the situation changes daily. Rumors are flying.... but it's just that.. rumors. Until I see something on paper, that's all I take it for.

HAL/ALO Merger

I'll second what freight dog said. There's little concrete evidence on what we'll exactly look like after the merger, but (unlike a number of pilots here at Hawaiian) I do have faith in Greg Brenneman. I don't think he won the trust of Continental employees by scr*wing them over, and I think he'll do good by us too.

The latest word from Brenneman is that we'll have 24 short haul jets, 22 long haul jets, and the 4 DHC-8's for island air by the end of this year, and growing 7 - 10% per year after that. He expects to dump all ALO's 737-200's, except for four to be used exclusively as freighters, and have all 717's running passengers interisland. The long haul will be a mix of 767's and 757's. Aloha's NG 737's will be replaced by the end of 2002 with 757's. The DC-10's will be gone by the end of 2003.

We should be the 10th largest airline when the merger is completed, and growing from there.

I also have faith in Brenneman. I'd rather have him running the new company than Zander or Casey, or anyone else for that matter. To be very honest with you, I'd like to see Sonny Ching go away too, but who knows.. maybe Brenneman will pay him to sit at the beach all day.

Who told you that? The same guys trying to kill the deal through CCAT? They'll say anything to get people behind their plan to kill the merger - because 1) they're scared of anything new, and don't have the forsight to see what would happen if the deal was trashed (think about someone like Lorenzo coming in); and 2) CCAT is run by travel agents who, in the event of a merger, would lose their gravy train of 30% commission on interisland coupons while the airlines lose money on every ticket.

Straight from Brenneman's mouth is that we should have every pilot back soon because of the training bubble in getting the ALO guys into the 717, and 757. I doubt you'll be sitting on the beach this summer.

Check out Provo in the Turks and Ciacos Islands, they are always looking for pilot's for their Aztec's, 402's, and whatever.
