They just sent me another application package after I turned them down a year ago. Check out the deal they have for me.

1. Pay for my own airline ticket to the interview from the east coast $1000

2. If offered the job pay for my own airline ticket back to Hawaii. $1000

3. Pay for my own hotel during 3 weeks of ground school (cheap hole in hawaii 60$ a night) $1300

So basically I have to pay 3300$ or more for some 20k a year job living in the most expensive state in the US.

What I love is all the responses I will get about people saying "hey pay your dues", "dont apply here we dont need some cocky pilot like you here".

No, I will never work for a company that is so arrogant that they expect ME to pay for those sort of things.. A total @#%^@# joke! I looked at that application for about 2 minutes then threw it right in the trash can.

You could work for Republic to get the travel benefits, then travel to your Island interview for a lot less.:D

Yes, there will be many pay-for-training whores who will be happy to sell out
just to be a pilot, but you are not one of them. Maybe you have integrity and self-respect, and the foresight to know that we are all responsible in protecting our profession. Keep looking, and a decent job will come up.
Congratulations, and best wishes.

If we have to shut Mesaba down to avoid working under sub-mesa pay and work rules, then so be it. We all need to establish what the bottom line for this profession is. When our holding company-alleged management then begins to replace us, all should stay away...unless you want to be a serf on the new nwa farm...

This career sucks, but the job is still a pleasure. See ya!

Yep, if we all stick together and turn jobs like this down things will change. Imagine if a company like Island Air couldnt find pilots for a year. Eventually they will pay for all the training and airfare and bring up pay to attract people. Lets stand together and put an end to this slavery.

I doubt it. There is always going to be some "Golden Sperm" boy that will just get the money from Daddy to go out there and build time.

As soon as he has his time, he will get Daddy to pay for his 737 type to go to SWA.

Not even a pass from an Aloha city?? JOKE!!

Baja.
Since they're no longer affiliated with Aloha, that ain't happenin'.

And BB, maybe, just maybe, they make you pay your way out here to keep whining mainland pansies from taking the job. Ever think of that?

Ps. There's still no free lunch either. (Another really good thread)

Aloha.

uh..typically if there is a free airline ticket involved its from one of the cities they serve and on their own aircraft. if you're coming from an island air served city, i'm sure they'd offer you a ride.

if they paid for ual tickets for everyone that interviewed, how many applicants do you think they'd have that just put in an app because they wanted a free vacation in hawaii?

saabservant,

this is hardly pft. throwing pft around loosely like that dilutes it true meaning and effect. kinda like how everyone has been calling everyone else they dont like a scab. if you not sure of what pft is by the words that make it up, just ask and someone can explain it to you.

Well I have another company that Im interviewing with and they are reimbersing me for the ticket. Island Air is pretty much pay for training.

Don't forget to bring a brownbag lunch ya dork!

you guys need to ask all of your eagle captians that were hired back in the early 90s what they paid for their jobs and the rest of the commuters.

Hey Mr. Captain, what don't you just go back to your mamma and ask her to ..you know what! All I hear from you cry babies is "they should pay for our ticket" or " They should give us lunch"! Why don't you ask them to wipe your bottom too!
Anyways, I haven't paid $$ to fly the mighty Dash 8 yet!

They are not the only carrier in Hawaii that makes you pay your own way to interview and then to the job if you take it! Nature of the beast

"Hmm, Smithers, we're not able to attract the 1500hr ATP's we need simply by paying them during training. Take this young lad who turned us down. Why he is only asking for us to pony up a private room for him in addition to his pay for a month before he can generate one dime for us. We do pay for his hotel when he is in recurrent, don't we?"
"No."
"Do we pay for all our employees lunches on top of their salary?"
"No."
"Has he expressed a sincere desire to work for us as a loyal employee?"
"No. He turned down the last job offer, remember."
"And what more can I do to attract such a valued candidate? Send a car for him?"
"He's asking for a free ticket."
"Splendid...."

Didn't know that they weren't together anymore...WOW. I agree with you as for mainland guys. I was the first mainland guy hired in 1989 and I had a tough time from the other crews and staff. WIth all the mainland jobs available stay there - leave Island Air to the locals! If you want to pick up and move and become a resident and then try for a job that would work.

Enjoy the Aloha.....Baja.

Island Air, Hawaiian, and Aloha are looking for local pilots, that is why you didn't get a ticket to the interview. Sucks for you, but who cares. Quit you're bitching. PFT is paying for a job. PFT is not accepting a class date with a company which requires you to travel yourself to the class.

Interesting, In 15+ years of flying for a living, I have NEVER paid for a hotel while working (working= Training, layover, including newhire and recurrent, 91,135,and 121)

How things change, it appears from the comments that the new guys have een programmed to believe that paying for their own hotel in training is normal and has always been that way.

I don't think it is standard to have to pay for lodging, etc. when hired at a new company. However, the carriers in HNL are not your average airlines. They recruit, and desire local's. Locals do not b!tch about the cost of living, or the climate, or the people and their attitudes, etc. Until recently, the carriers had not had to recruit outside of Hawaii. Now, evidently, WP is having some trouble finding qualified local talent, so they are recruiting from the Mainland. I imagine that if people are not traveling for the interview, that maybe they will start to buy tickets.

What about Horizon? You don't even choose your airplane and you have to sign a 2 or 3 year contract? If you leave you have to pay a prorated amount back. The amount in the contract is around $7,000+
not to mention that if you live outside the AS/QX route map you still have to pay for a ticket to one of their cities to get a free ride the rest of the way.

Skywest for a while didn't pay you while you were in training and once again, in order to get a free ride you have to be in a city served by UA/DL/OO

Island Air does not require any contract, theoreticly you can come down here, get your type, fly for a month and leave and no one would care and you owe nothing.

Island Air Has MANY shortcomings, but PFT isn't one of them.

thats probably the most ignorant statment i've ever seen. do you not know what the words "pay for training" mean? you do not have to pay for training at island air, they pay for the sim and all the training and instruction you need.

i guess you, big bird and saabservant wont be applying at FedEx either as those cheap bastards wont buy you a ticket to the interview either.

big bird,

most airlines dont pay you to live in a hotel in your own base. like everyone else WP pays for your hotel during your training that is away from base. if you're looking for someone to pay for you to live in a hotel in your base, you need to put down the crack pipe and pull the silver spoon outta yer a$$.

D8D, this is post was pure Zen! Beautiful, brah.

Jesus! Fedex? Are you even comparing Fedex to Island Air. HAHAHAAHHA. Lets see in a few years I will be making 120k a year at FedEx.. Who gives a fark about a 40$ a night hotel room in memphis!!

yes, its sad, those rich momma boys who get their mom and dad to pay for school, flight training, and give them an allowance way into their career.....then they blend in with the rest of us and are most likely the ones who vote to screw evryone in the industry

yes.. you are a joke. i am pointing out that your criteria for what is a "pay for training" company is also found at fedex.. but i guess you're too stupid to see that. just ignore the fact and go with what makes you feel big when mommy and daddy arent around.

haha this loser "ilikeairplanes" sent me a nasty PM. haha what a little kid. if you cant handle a public forum, dont show your a$$. next time learn the terms you are debating (pay for training) before you try to use them. you wont look like such an idiot next time.

and no you wont be making 120k at fedex, the dont hire whiney brats. with 4800 hours and still in a kingair.. something must be wrong with you, and it shows!

Funny how they're "natives" until it's time to get the passport....do they mean natives to be long time residents..or the shipwrecked Samoans who inhabited the chain many moons ago??? Gee I was born there in Tripler, does that make me a native??? Good grief, what a ridiculous load of bollocks!!

how does the native issue fit in here?

the issue you're talking about involves a small handfull of uneducated racist jacka$$es that have nothing to do with aviation. they more than likely never will need a passport.... they are usually "native" until its time for the welfare check to come.
