I am planning on attending the Skywest group interview in Chicago on thursday but my first class medical turned into a second class as of yesterday. I'm scheduled with my AME for another first class next week.

So, is not having a first class medical at the group interview going to get me sent home or is the "first class medical" requirement only for the SLC interviews?

I wouldn't think so. You still have a first class medical, with second class priveleges. To be SIC all you need is a second class medical with second class priveleges. I don't think it would be disqualifying since you have shown you are able to hold a first class medical. Unless skywest has a rule for all pilots to hold a first class. IMOA.

Try to get a first class or make sure to explain to them you are getting one. They like to see a first class medical. I was in the open house in San Diego! Excellent company, good luck.

Thanks for the replies.
I have a first class but it has slipped to second class privelages. On their website they require a current 1st class and that is why I am worried.
Originally I wasn't going to be able to attend this open house but my schedule changed yesterday so now I am scrambling a bit but its only a 3 hr drive from my house so I decided I should try and make it.

I wouldn't even bring it up unless specifically asked about it. You have a first class medical; which is what I believe they are looking for. If you need first class privileges, you can always go to your AME ASAP and get a new medical.

Good Luck!

My buddy interviewed in the same position as you and they DID want it to be a current first class. He got the "Can't you follow directions?" treatment.
He did not get the job.
I'd get the medical ASAP. SKW is a good place to be, and it would be worth the trouble to get the medical now.

If they require a first class medical and yours is no longer then in reality you now have a current 2nd class. If the site stated that a 2nd class medical is required then you probably would be fine. Just because you "had" a current first class does not mean that you still have one, it has now slipped down to a 2nd.

I would not show up with a 2nd if they require a current first class medical, just me though so do as you wish..

I guarantee if you showed up to XJT with an expired 1st class you would be sent home (and your name remembered). Most airlines feel the same way for INITIAL interviewing and hiring, and it would surprise me if Skywest was any different. After your intial PC most airlines allow FOs to let their 1st class lapse to 2nd, but then require you to get another 1st class when the 2nd class is about to expire. Make an excuse why you can't make that interview and request the next date they have available. Get your 1st class updated. If you are sent home it will be your own fault.

It is only an open house, he would not need to "give them a reason".. The smart thing to do would probably skip this one and attend the next open house that they have when the applicant is able to get a current first class medical. I second the above, would be highly surprised if they let the applicant continue the process with a second class medical once that fact was made known.

hey i was at an open house and went through the trouble of getting a current 1st. when i showed up at the open house they liked that i had one but said they needed it for the next interview in SLC. but it does say to have one for the open house so who knows. if i were you i would just go get a new med. if you're worried about it. its always a little gamble going to a new AME you never know if their going to give you the scary finger.

Again, thanks for the replies...I am starting to lean the direction of skipping this one and going to the next date that I can make. I feel too rushed trying to get my "ducks in a row" and there was a nagging voice inside telling me I should wait until I have my medical. I think I'm just going to chalk this one up to odd scheduling and bad timing and move on. I definitely don't want to be the "I can't follow directions" guy who shoots himself in the foot.

Thanks.

I must be getting old.

I forgot how silly this industry is...Go make someone spend $80 on something they don't need so you can go interview for a job that pays the same as unemployement.

Bon chance.

If you can get through security at ORD and to the medical center in terminal 2 there is an AME there who will take walk ins. Relativly cheap and relaxed approach plus you get to walk out with your class 1. Many pilots go there on turns out of ORD.

Just finished there group interview here in Dulles, never asked about medicals today, be ready for the written test ATP questions and the tech test (no way to study for it) then they will bring you in for a face to face, this is all to see if they want to have to out to SLC for the rest of the interview process. Thats when you will probably need to have a current 1st class. Don't forget to bring your resume. Have fun they were a great group.

61.23 defines a medical and its duration... a First Class Medical, when being used for a commercial pilot certificate AKA an SIC, expires at the end of the last day of the 12th month... so if you have a First Class Medical and it is less than a year old... it is still a current First Class Medical, not a Second Class Medical.. In other words, no need to get a new medical becuase you still have a current First Class

DO NOT try using this as an excuse at an airline interview. NUFF SAID.

You have to ask yourself, is this the kind of outfit you want to work for? They seem to turn people away for not having a current first class medical, when they themselves don't seem to know what a first class medical is.

Why do you, a person interviewing to be an FO, need ATP privelages? If you have a First class medical that is less than 12 months old, you have sufficent privelages to do your job. You still have to meet the medical requirements of the first class medical even if it is older than 6 months.

Maybe it's just me but these ridiculous open house, come half way across the country just to get considered for an interview, show up dressed like everyone else and YOUR logbook better be kept the way WE want it companies need a wake up call. But that is easy for me to say, I have a job. I understand the want and need to bend over backwards to get a job but it seems to be getting a little out of control.

Just my .02, no offense to anyone out there busting arse for a job, keep on keeping on, but just ask yourself is this really what I want or is there something better out there?

ah, the only reason this "open house" was considered was because it's NOT halfway around the country, it's just up the road for me.

Go to Carlito Orig, 708-496-1515. At the occupational health center right near MDW. He can get you in, get you out in less than one hour. I scheduled medicals with him twice when I needed it like "tomorrow." Once I called at 1pm to schedule a 9am medical for the following day, which happened to be the day before I started ground school with my first company. I was in dire straights. Good luck bro!

F.I.---I just interviewed with SkyWest a few weeks ago, took my 1st Class medical with me (and its been over 6 months since the check) and presented it with confidence.

I was told that should I get the call, schedule an appointment and bring a "current" 1st Class. Okay, no problem. I asked if their OpSpecs require the SIC to always be "current", and the answer was no, they just want to ensure you can pass one before you get hired. Cool.

I got the invitation, and will have the doc look me over tomorrow.
I admit I had the same concern as you, but the regs are the regs, and I went with that conviction.

I still agree with your decision not to rush things, luck is when opportunity meets with preparation, yes? With that...GOOD LUCK!

So just because you have to work hard for a job it isn't worth getting now? Go hand out fries you lazy SOB.

I knew somone would read that the wrong way. I apologize for offending anyone, wasn't my intent. I worked very hard for my job and even harder to pass training. In no way am I saying having to work hard for a job makes the job worthless, those jobs are the most rewarding. I am trying to point out that traveling all over the country just to turn in your resume should not be tolerated by us as a group. Lucky for the OP he lives near where one of these recruiting fairs was and had no trouble. But what about everyone else who has worked just as hard as you, the OP, or me and can't get to these ridiculous things?

My other point was, if a company is going to require you travel across the country then turn you down because they themselves don't know what a first class medical is, is that really an outfit you want to work for?

Again I meant no offense to anyone, if they can get a job and are happy good for them, but don't go after a job just because its a job do whats right for you and yours not what everyone else is doing.

As a side note, next time you call someone an SOB, take a long look in the mirror, that SOB is probably staring back at you!

Is this something you really want to gamble? See your AME before the interview and then go to vegas for the gambling.

Get yourself to a typewriter, and change the month of the exam on your exising medical. Presto...current 1st class med.

My other point was said:
No one forces you to apply. They set the hiring requirements and you shouldn't show unless you meet them. You start in the right seat but they all hire for the left. With your attitude Always, passport at ASA and this, I'm surprised you have a job.
