The east runway at COS is 13500 ft long because that is the balanced field length for a fully loaded B727 in the summer at 6000 ft msl. The fact that there is a military base co-located with COS had nothing to do with the runway length. Fedex at one time was going to build a hub there and this runway was built to try and entice Fedex to locate in COS

Thats interesting - I had no idea (obviously). Thanks for the info, too bad it never came to be.

I'll have to start referring to it as 17FE/35FE

Dade-Collier is pretty long and just out in the middle of now where in teh Florida everglades....what is that airport used for?

I'm surprised that Denver hasn't been mentioned yet, 16000ft!

Just out there yesterday. TNT, it is used for training. You have to have a permit from the Dade County Aviation Board Authority whatever they call it. Great place to train, all the large airlines do their bounces there, Part 135 use it for training. The Miami FSDO uses it for all their checkrides. Just watch out for the rattlesnakes and gators. It has a 10000+ long runway, full ILS, etc, etc, no tower, just a local yocal to keep things in order.

It was originally built as a base for the Boeing 2707 (SST) that would be away from noise-sensitive areas, and later was used as a training airport for airliners. It appears to be closed now.

Denver...16,000'??? Never heard that before. Anyone see my BBQ brisket and beer? (now, if that isn't a thread hi-jack, I don't know what is! :D)

What used to be Meachem, in Fort Worth, had 14000. They wanted to be the premier airport, especially when Love was the only other one. They forgot politics, and built a huge airport and runway, adjacent to the Dallas county line. Didn't work though, and no one ever went there. The B-36 was there on display for a long time.

Denver 16000'?

Bangor, Maine (KBGR) which also happens to be the dumping grounds for all no-fly terrorist types coming into the USA has a long one 11440 x 200 ft.

I heard that Denver Intl has a 16,000' runway, can anybody confirm that?
