I recently returned to flying after attempting this in 2017. The cost of instruction + plane is insane these days (2020). In 2017 I paid $239 for a 0.9 in a Glass 172. The glass wasn't needed but I figured I'd try it out. I'm now getting my tailwheel endorsement and flew a little over 4 hours with an instructor with an hour or two of ground training. Cost was over $900!
We're headed for a pilot shortage not just due to lack of interest in aviation but because our own FBO's are killing the industry, in my opinion. We need to make the cost of learning to fly more affordable to open the pipeline or we are headed for unmanned airline transport.
