Dude fricking chill out!! SWA requires a type because they save money on training. It has nothing to do with being able to fly a 737 or not. Get a clue.

Who needs a clue? The type rating doesn't really save SWA money. You still go through the same type and amount of sim training that other 737 operators perform. It does save them a wee bit of sim time for the upgrade because there are a few maneuvers not required on the upgrade ride if you're already typed.

The 737 type requirement is largely a cultural requirement rather than a financial consideration.

Southwest seems to do a better job of hiring people from a variety of backgrounds. I know guys that were flying single pilot freight in a Be-99 or Metro that bought a type and got hired. How many other majors hire guys like that? Some of the 135 guys don't even have a 4 year degree. How many majors have a firm 1000 PIC requirement? We all know some of the legacy carriers hired people with less than 1000TT. At least at SWA everyone has been a captain before they start. I think being a captain at your current job makes you a better FO at your next job. Everyone in ground school has at least one type rating under their belt, most likely more.

Uhhhh I think the WHOLE INDUSTRY top to bottom is LOWERING the bar folks......

That being said.......get a type to get a job that will be secure (well as secure as you can get in this industry).........and halfway decent wages.......yup I WOULD do it....
