I've talk to a couple pilots who like working there. Good growth potential with DHL's new heavy investment in the U.S. overnight system.

In the wake of 9/11, it's taken a big boost with its freight stability factor.

Here's a hiring thread on Astar (former DHL) Air hiring
http://forums.airlinepilotcentral.com/showthread.php?t=150

I do not think ABX is hiring, as they have some pilots out on furlough.

There is really no "DHL" in the U.S. anymore. Either ABX Air (formerly Airborne Express) or Astar (Formerly DHL Airways) flies their freight now.

Regarding ABX, I my opinion, it has been a pretty good place the last 6 years. Pay is very good as well as a decent quality of life. No hiring at the present, but recent rumors point to possible hiring, hopefully in the near future.

I heard from some contacts in the industry that ABX is NOT going to paint anymore aircraft in DHL colors. They are instead to be painted in ABX colors. If true this can't bode well for the future of ABX in providing DHL lift as DHL would want it's contractors to be flying planes in their paint job. Not trying to start anything, just something I heard and would like to hear what insiders at ABX or Astar have to say.

I also heard that DHL is thinking of taking over the A300 orders that UPS cancelled and consolidating them mainly in europe and asia for EAT and Dragonair and taking the 757s of DHL Air UK and bringing them to the US to be "offered for bid" to ABX and Astar with the lowest bidder getting the aircraft.

I saw a painting schedule last week. About a dozen airplanes scheduled to be painted by August, all but one in DHL colors. The one in ABX Air colors is a DC8 as we don't have an ABX Air DC8 yet.

Astar Air Cargo (formerly DHL airways) is currently in a hiring mode. Interviewing right now for 2 upcoming classes in May/June/July timeframe. Getting some new-used (ATA old 727's) aircraft. 3-4 more to come. One just arrived last week. Lots of growth this year somewhere in the frame of 25%. Taking some stations from Abex and giving some to them, although we will end up gaining about 9 in the end. Lot's of Positivity about growth and a big announcement coming soon. DHL Worldwide is very happy with our performance and that will help with the growth. Lot's of good things going on here.

I'm sorry, after 19 years of hearing about "the BIG announcement" I get a huge chuckle everytime I hear this. I'm amazed people still fall for this.

the BIG announcement

"about growth and a big announcement coming soon."

BAH, HA, HA, HA, NO MORE YANKY MY WANKY, THE DONGER, HE NEED REST!!!
Just my 2 cents.

All in all though things not to bad around here. Other than missing door handles. People are starting to steal pieces of the hub, maybe they are relocating them to ILN.

Sorry, shoulda been more specific in my post. As far as any "big announcement" I shoulda said "announcement" in terms of growth,my bad, just excited about Astar. From what I've heard recently is that there is going to be some bigger growth on the Charter (non-dhl) side of Astar. You know the horse charters, etc. Supposedly there is a new guy in charter sales that will grow our charter business quite significantly. Also some hot rumors out of JAX about more 727's coming beyond the original number, but this is still in the rumor stage....sorry if anyone's panties got in a bun over my post....:)

Just reminiscing, I could have gone to DHL in approx mid-1998. Where would I be on the seniority list had I gone?

I instead went to TWA and enjoyed a wonderful career there.. uh well, at least for a little while....

That DC8 sim was pretty fun to fly, the guys were great that I interviewed with. It seemed a bit contentious with managment back then but where isn't it.

Most likely right seat on the 727. You may have had the opportunity to go to DC8 last year or so. I am guessing about 350 on senority out of about 530 pilots, including the most recent new hires. 3 weeks of vacation and about 50 or 60K in 401K donated by the company.....not including your contribution and gains or loses. Hired in '98 probably about 2 to 4 years from the left seat.

They are hiring if you want to give it a shot again. You didnt say where you were at so I dont know if that would be best. Skeds are good, pay isn't bad but expect to sit in the back for awhile.

Anyone have a link to the current pay scale.

Also, info about the schedules too please.

Put my stuff in with ASTAR, got a canned email from the company. Always kind of interested in DHL, knew the Skipper, he always talked it up.

I spent two years at DHL, and spent many nights over the north atlantic with the Skipper. Based on his reputation, I was dreading flying with him. He turned out to be one of the nicest guys I've ever worked with. Eccentric as hell, but a heart of gold. I have the honor of being dubbed an"honorary bridge commander" by him. The company is ok. They have a penchant for creating lots of busy work to do enroute, but I guess it's to keep everybody from sleeping all the way. If you've never flown nights, it is a real b*tch on your body, and the effects are cumulative, so you don't even realize how bad it's trashing you. Pick your poison, as I'm living the Chapter 11 dream now. To quote the Skipper: "So it is written, so let it be done."
