In today's Commercial Appeal (Memphis newspaper) there is a story about all the voluntary cuts the workers at NW are giving the company. Ths story starts on page one below the fold and tells about the pilots and FAs giving back $432 million and the ticket agents, rampers and baggage handlers giving back $114 million. Keep in mind this is all on top of the givebacks they have already made.
The article continues on page 8, down along a nice big (nearly full page) ad for NW touting their new SUPER BARGAIN DAYS fares. You can fly to LA from Memphis for $134 each way, that is a round trip fare of 268 + 31.20 (fees) which means you can fly round trip for less than 300 clams. Try driving back and forth on that.
(Maybe in a Prius you could beat it, but not in most cars. Not to mention how everybody seems to think their time is so valuable, it would take at least 4 days driving 15 hours per day. The math: 1800 miles each way, 20 MPG equals 180 gals of gas X $2.00 per gal (as if) = 360 dam dollars!. 3600 miles/60 MPH (ave) = 60 hours /15 = 4 days).
So after reading about hard working NW employees giving up a huge percentage of their wages you can plan your bargain days trip to LA and back for less that you could drive.
I find this pretty ironic and very sad for our brethren at NW.
