I was opposed to the war, but having really looked into the whole thing, read a little bit of history, it is obvious that we have to act.
Let's look at some facts. Following WW1, Germany was ordered to disarm. 15 years following the war, Adolf Hitler came to power and said to hell with the international community, international law, and restrictions imposed on them. 6 years later, we had Europe plunge into war. France was overrun, England escaped by the skin of their teeth.
6 millions Jews + millions of other people worldwide lost their lives. But let's say we could go back in time. Would we take out Hitler in 1933? Knowing what we know now, would we put up with him until 1939 when it was too late to avoid a world war?
Note the similarities of the situations after WW1 and following the Gulf War with Iraq. Iraq has been thumbing their nose at the UN following the Gulf War for 12 years now. Their own immigrants want to see the regime change and back the U.S. in getting rid of him. We see a bunch of our flower-power anti-war protesters protesting, but as shown by this radio broadcast, they don't even know what they're protesting against, nor do they suggest an alternative.
I've lost faith in UN during the wars in former Yugoslavia where they idly stood by and watched WW2-like atrocities happen in the heart of Europe and NOBODY did anything. Just like WW2, it took the U.S. pushing and stepping in to bring the war to an end. We're doing it again in Iraq so those flower-power, spread-the-aloha-around-the-world, make-love-not-war hippies don't get hurt on a much larger scale than 9/11, so that we bring somewhat of a stability to the Middle East in at least one country. We are also acting in our own self-interests which we are entitled to.
You can learn the lesson from history. Or you can let it happen again. Europe let it happen following WW1, they were overrun and we liberated them . Our European friends have let it happen again on their front porch in Yugoslavia (Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo). We ended it. How long does it take until we start treating Europe like our mentally-handicapped cousins incapable of protecting themselves, let alone preventing horrible atrocities to their own people throughout the history?
I am glad that we took the stand that we did. I am fully supporting this war. God bless our troops!
There is no personal attack going on, I don't even know who the he11 you are, but the next time I run across someone named Snakum I'll introduce myself as Swass and we can debate these issues until the cows come home
. Give me a break this is an internet board, an aviation internet board at that. Let's get back to why we are all here, flying. The political boards are accepting new members I'm sure.
But online ... it'd just look ignorant and immature. It's not like we can 'step outside' when one of us finally has had enough, so any bravado is patently false. Debating politics, policies, or even Airbus v.s. Boeing isn't IMHO anything to get riled about to the point of irrational confrontation. It's merely an exchange of ideas and I am often suprised at how much I learn by listening to the other side.
