Looking to add wifi to the airplane. Has anyone implemented wifi on board, who did you use, does it work, what's the approximate cost, etc. Specifically, anything you would recommend against?

Thanks!!!

Onboard Internet

I have it on two ships, both are EMS systems with satellite service provided by Satcomm Direct via the Inmarsat system. $7.95 per 1Mb throughput so it runs about a dollar to a dollar-fifty a minute. We have three "wired" ports on the airplanes and have had three users up at the same time with no apparent degradation to the 432Mbps speed.

Our system is Wifi capable but the FAA certification is very troublesome.

While domestic only, you might want to research the Aircell Axxess (sp) system. There are a number of airframes that now have the system. Much less expensive than the satcom systems for both equipment and minutes of usage.

The Aircell has caught my eye. And we are flying 90% USA, 8% Canada, and 2% anywhere else. Do you have the service on your ship? If so...

1. Is it enabled for WiFi?
2. Are you satisfied with the service?
3. Does installation void any aircraft warranties?
4. Approximate installation costs / service fees?

Thanks!

Aircell is the way to go.

We do not have it on our aircraft. The decision had noting to do with cost or performance, our CEO decided he wanted to get away from the office while on board so no need. We did do the research as we were delivering a new aircraft and liked what we saw.

As far as as your other questions, there should be no issues with a warranty as this is being spec'ed by many for new aircraft at the OEM completion centers. It is WIFI capable for PDA's and so equipped laptops.
The cost is most likely a quarter of what you will pay for a full blown satcom system and the cost for usage is very minimal. The 10,000 foot limitaion does in fact exist.

With the flight patterns you discussed this system may be perfect.
