I wonder that as well...having peaked as a species. What happened to the bold risk taking we used to do. To do the hard stuff just to KNOW, not for money, fame, or 'a thrill'. Instead, we get lawsuits, people wanting protection from EVERYTHING...turning inward verses outward.
Am I off on a tangent...yea, maybe, but I can't help but think we should be a lot farther along now on exploration that we are...and wonder if we will ever be able to get back on track with the increasing weight of other things.
A lot of the amazing technological feats of the last century were spurred by competition with others. The space race was with the Rooskies. Aviation, a spinnoff of the space race, IMO. with no other superpower in competition with us, I'm not optimistic we'll (the US) move forward much. Might even slide back significantly. Humans need competition. Otherwise we get fat, bored and unhappy.
