For the multi with instrument privileges, the PTS states you do (at least) a single engine approach. Correct me if I'm wrong, this is just off the top of my head. I did two approaches on my multi ride.
 
They are not separate ratings on your ticket, Single or twin, all the instrument part will say is "instrument airplane." Down2mins pretty much has it.

From the FAA's standpoint, the only difference between flying instruments in a single and a twin is loss of one engine. So, as ESF said, if you take your IR checkride in a twin, you are automatically good in a single - there's nothing different.

But if you already have your IR in a single when you go for your multi, the PTS (not the instrument ride) has the single-engine tasks for you. Do them and your ticked will say

Ratings: ASEL, AMEL, Instrument Airplane

Don't do it and there will be a "restricted to VFR" limitation associated with the AMEL.
 
This is not FAA wise, but the way I understand it is this.....You get a MEL IFR same ride...COOOOOOOL....Shoot an approach on you checkride single engine. If you have the IFR ticket before you get your ME rating, shoot an approach on your checkride....COOOOOOOOOL. Done. NDB approaches non terminal are fun single engine. Especially at night with a Florida thunderstorm underway and flying the inbound withing 2 miles of the shore. FUN FUN FUN. The DE will pass that one with 90' of being off......Damn those are fun!

Added my private multiengine on before I was instrument rated.

Pre IFR Checkride:

Private Pilot
Airplane Single and Multiengine Land

After IFR Checkride

Private Pilot
Airplane Single and Multiengine Land
Instrument Airplane

Limitations:
Airplane Multiengine Land VFR Only


Later on I did my commercial single. Still was Multiengine VFR only. Two days later my Multi Commercial. Did my SE approaches and was fully IFR "kwaliefied"
 
Just my $0.02 I did have my inst and comm before my multi... the DPE gave the the option to do just a multi private, multi commercial, or multi instrument commercial. Difference is with the comm added in we had to do some commecial maneuvers... with the instrument added in we had to do two inst approaches, one without an engine (just idle, not shut down) Whole ride only took a little over an hour
 
i got my single private, multi private, multi instrument, single instrument, multi commercial - in that order.. you have to take a seperate checkride for each.... however, on the single instrument (after you already have the multi) the checkride was .4 on the hobbs
 
I had my comm ASEL; instrument before I got my multi. Then we did a couple single engines approaches in addition to the other multi engine commercial manuevers so I am know a full bird skyjockey. Make sense?

If you already have your instrument rating, but not your multi, you do not need to take a multi private or commercial ride and then a separate multi instrument ride. When you go to take your multi ride, you will have to do an approach if you want instrument privileges in multiengine airplanes. It’s all one ride! You wasted your time and money taking all those separate checkrides. This is spelled out in part 61 and the PTS. This is done on a daily basis where I instruct and everywhere else!
