uncontrolled field, no weather, no instr. app. prcds., what are correct ways for departing?{clearances, void times, should you file to nearest fix or navaid, etc. thanks.
 
You're responsible for maintaining your own terrain and obstacle clearance until reaching the minimum IFR altitude, or until receiving radar vectors. When radar vectors are assigned, the controller assumes responsibility for terrain and obstacle separation.

Fly as assigned, maintaining your own separation. In lieu of an assignment, you're on your own nav until reaching the filed fix, or established on routing as given in the clearance, or until given vectors or a specific clearance.

Clearance void times are as provided in your clearance. Alternately, you may depart VFR and pick up the clearance airborne. Sometimes that's an advantageous or necessary act, as you may not be able to get anybody on the ground.

It's exactly the same as for a towered airport with a few differences:

1. If you want your clearance before you depart, you will have to use one of the alternative to the way you would do it at a towered field. These include:
  • Void time clearances usually picked up from FSS by telephone or radio
  • Being close enough to an ATC antenna so that you can pick it up on the radio just like at a towered field
  • Alternatively, you can file IFR and mote that you will pick up the clearance in the air. Of course, you have to be able to maintain VFR until you get it.

    2. Terrain clearance will be your responsibility until you ATC starts vectoring you.
 
Don't forget that you can use your cellphone to call FSS while you're in the airplane on the ground. Just don't forget to turn the phone off before taking off.
