We bought a Piaggio Avanti P180, class is going to be soon. Now I'm trying to find a good way to prepare myself for that. Since I have never flown anything with EFIS and FMS I am especially looking for any pointers on how to familiarize myself with it the best and quickest way.

Any online resources ?

Anyone selling a manual on the EFIS 85 and/or UNS 1K FMS please PM me. Will pay for shipping cost of course.

I've found a UNS-1K Sim for the PC but $900 is bit steep for me... :(

Thanks,
Sun'n Fun

PS: I'll get a POH by tomorrow, so I don't need that
PPS: Yes, this is one sweet airplane, I'm soooo happy! :D

I wouldn't sweat it too bad..

you will come out of school comfortable with the UNS. They are VERY user friendly - even for a first time FMS user.

remember, the school is geared toward a brand new user like yourself. The more you know about the plane going into it - great - but I wouldnt sweat the FMS stuff!!

Enjoy it and welcome to the 1980's!

:D ;)

EFIS is a no-brainer, and like G200 said; the FMS is very intuitive. I learned the UNS-1 as I went. I'm not the most computer literate guy out there, so if I can do it, you'll have no problem. Enjoy school.

Call Universal and they will send you a very basic training cdrom about the uns-1K. They sent me one with my first database update, which, by the way takes 45 minutes to load 6 floppy's and you get to do it once a month.

As for the efis 85, if you are going to fsi, they will send you the manuals before school if you ask. It is pretty straight forward though...

Good luck, that's supposed to be a cool ride...

UNS

I you are on this board you can use the UNS. It's very easy. The thing with first time EFIS is to let the system do the work. Get used to the term Automation.

Thanks for the Input, i'll call Universal and see if they can send me a Manual/CD-ROM.

The Training is at Piaggio, so no Simcom/FSI. After Groundschool (I don't know if they have PCs that they use to sim. some of the cockpit stuff), the Flightpart will be in our Plane, there are no Simulators for the Avanti yet. I guess the learning curve has to be pretty steep, since you are doing everything in the actual airplane and there is less room for error...

Thanks for the advice, greatly appreciated! :)

Call Universal in Tucson, AZ (520 area code and 800#).

Carol Jett can get the CD rom on it's way to you, and also can tell you about pricing on Universal's courses. They do a great job, and for alot less than the $900 you would spend on PC "sim". Class is run using actual UNS's, so real screen, real buttons, instead of clicking mouse on picture of FMS. Perhaps they also have a freeplay sim by now.

Depending how many pilots, Universal will come to you. If your company just bought new Universals, typically a couple pilots will get training for free. Tucson is nice this time of year. Not too far from the airport. Facility in Witchita as well.

One day course is great, but if you plan on doing Rnav/GPS approaches, I suggest the second, and maybe 3rd day, either in initial or later. Universal will teach the finer points, like intercepting and flying DME arc's with the box, etc.

The CD will get you up and running, but surely not enough to be educamated on the arc to GPS xx approach...

I called Universal, The CD should be on its way. Thanks!

I've flown lots of GPS-Approaches with Garmin 430/530 and KLN94s, so I hope the transition to the FMS shouldn't be to difficult.

My first exposure to the EFIS 85 and the UNS1C (similar to the K) was in a BE-200. Never flown either before hopping into that King Air. The Universal CD is good for an overview, but to really learn the UNS system takes "hands-on" in the aircraft. (Unless you can get to the Universal training class, which is reat by the way.)

Make sure the other guy is flying, then just play with it. It really is intuitive. I had it figured out for enroute nav after the first flight. SIDS and STARS took a little more, but pretty easy. Approaches are the most difficult; well, not really difficult, but you have to be careful. I flew the EFIS 85 and UNS1C for about a year, got real comfortable with enroute, SIDS and STARS; then went to the Universal training class in Tucson for "Approach Training" which learnt me GPS and RNAV approaches using the box. Very valuable training class.

EFIS is a no brainer. One flight and you'll have it figured out. Just let the other guy fly and look out the window while you play with it. You can probably call or write Collins for some formal training material; not sure what it costs though.
