We are going up there the 28th for Indy 500, first time to Indianapolis, looking for some help with airport(5000ftmin) and hotel close to the track.:)

Thanks

I *think* Indy Executive (TYQ) will meet those needs, but its a bit farther north. Also maybe consider Eagle Creek (EYE) and International (IND). I'm not sure the lengths of EYE or TYQ, but I think both have a ton of 500 traffic.

Hope this helps...

5,000 feet close to the track leaves you with KIND. As far as hotels close to the track - well if you ain't got one yet good luck finding one - you're several months behind the power curve!

I used to be based at Raytheon at IND and they are (or at least used to be) pretty good folks. Give them a call they may be able to help with finding a room. Usually their service is pretty good. In the past they have had stuff set up in their main hangar(Food, TV's, etc) for the flight crews and shuttles to the track.

EYE (Eagle Creek) is only 4,200' long and uncontrolled. TYQ(Terry - or Indy Exec or whatever they're calling it these days) is 5,500' long but is also uncontrolled and has very limited hard ramp space - plenty of grass area to park on but that's probably not an option for you since you need 5,500' feet of runway. Not to mention, as the above post stated, it's pretty far north.

CL600 is right... your best option is going to be IND. TYQ or MQJ (Mount Comfort) are the only two other options. Space is limited at TYQ. MQJ is a nice facility with a 5500' runway, ILS, etc. and easy to get in and out of but it's also 20 NM east of IND. In other words, it's a ways out.

As for hotels... good luck. At this point you probably can't find a thing near the track. All the hotels in that area are along the lines of a Comfort Inn... not sure what type of place you want. You can find chains like Marriot, Raddison, Adam's Mark, etc. by IND, otherwise I would suggest something downtown for something nicer.

Again, I agree with CL600... give Raytheon a call... good people.

One more thing... you probably already know this but I'll throw it out just in case... there is a STMP slot program for IND and EYE for Thursday, Friday and Sunday. I think the website for slots is www.fly.faa.gov/estmp ...notams would have more info.

Have fun!

Thanks for the info looks like we are going to TYQ, They told me it's a 30 min. drive. Still looking for a hotel

Very good. Just so you know, that drive time they gave you is definitely best case... I'd say it would a little more under normal conditions and, if you get in race traffic, it will be a lot more. For hotels, you might look at the Michigan Rd & I-465 area. You'll pass through it on your drive from TYQ to the track. There is a bunch of hotels in that area... everything from Comfort Inn type places to an Embassy Suites. Sorry, I know it's not exactly near the track but probably somewhere you could find a place. For convenience it's nice to be near the track but if you just need a place to sleep, not so bad. If you're looking for nightlife though, downtown is the place to go.

Try the Holiday Inn College Park. It's on Michigan Rd. which is how you get from TYQ (is that Terry Apt.?) to Speedway. I doubt they have rooms but it's worth a try.

I read in Pro Pilot that sleeping in a Lear really isn't all that bad... ;) TC

Good luck finding a hotel. Last week, I was supposed to be there for the weekend and I had to go to carmel, indiana to find a hotel. You might be able to find a hotel at the last minute but most are charging a min of 4 night stay.

Also dont forget about slots into indy. I havent checked yet but usually they do.

Try the residence inn in carmel. I had a reservation there I had to cancel.

Yeah, we are going to EYE, and leaving after the race. Iam pretty sure if you want a hotel rooom, then your SOL.

Given that situation I'd definatley recommend IND unless there is some realllllllly good reason to go to TYQ. It's been a couple of years since I lived in Indy so maybe I'm not thinking right but as I remember it a 30 minute drive from TYQ to the speedway area MIGHT be possible in the middle of the night with no traffic but there ain't no way, no how you can drive it in 30 minutes on race day.

CL

One hour on race day to/from Terry is probably very realistic. The entire north-northwest side of town gets screwed up with traffic.

Probably more on the lines of 3 hours total

I have to go to an airport whit no time slots, I never know when we will depart looks like TYQ is my best option. 3 hours driving ?

3 hours on race day isn't totally out of the realm of possibility depending on what time you're doing it. I drove home from IND to my apartment on race day once - it took me a little over an hour to go 8 miles and I lived miles away from the Speedway. This was a couple of hours before race time - a few hours later during the race traffic wasn't as bad but yeah - if you're driving to the race to be there in time for the start make sure you go way early.

if you don't need the entire 5,000 ft then you might want to try HFY it's on the southside of indy and close to the interstate and has a car rental on the field in the FBO, and the fuel prices are cheaper too. it's 4,300x 75 rnwy 01-19 fuel 100LL jet-a ox 1-4 avail
some hotels in the area that are nice too

My problem is insurance 5000 ft RWY minimum.
Thank you for all the info.

This might work: Fly into HFY (Greenwood, IN) and drive downtown. From there (you can call Indygo bus company) you can get shuttles to the track. You might also call Carey Limo and check on a car service to and from the track (that would work better from EYE.

If you want to pay me $200, I will pick you up at EYE, drop you off near the track and then pick you up after the race and get you back to EYE. (It pays to have grown up 1.5 miles from the track. I know all the back roads... :D ) ;) TC
