There is a good saying: "The best cure for high oil prices is high oil prices."

That is basically what you think, and since we're procrastinators as a society it will probably be the only time anything gets done anyways.

I agree that price controls aren't needed and that we need to let the price go up. I wonder how much it will go up? It will be interesting to watch this grand experiment play itself out.

Not to worry, y'all, the Big Oil Companies use that profit to reinvest in drilling and refining capacity. They said so themselves.

Actually they would build more refineries but the liberal tree huggers (democrats) have made it virtually impossible.

PCL,

Looks like Bush is going to hurt the economy by acting preemptively. He should have consulted you first PCL. I thought he believed in the free market? He's acting like a sissy liberal again.....

Bush asks to change CAFE standards
President's request targets passenger car mileage
April 28, 2006
FREE PRESS STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES
The Bush administration asked Congress on Thursday to allow it to change fuel economy standards for passenger cars, a day after the president first said his administration would tackle rising gas prices amid increasing political pressure.

Charles Territo, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said he could not immediately comment on Mineta's request, but said "the best way to immediately reduce the amount of fuel we use and reach energy security is through the purchase of advanced technology vehicles and the more than 100 models currently being offered with fuel economy ratings of more than 30 miles per gallon."

I think Bush must be caving in to the environmentalist lobbying groups. ;)

I got $3 in the ATL now and it's not even hurricane season. I'm thinking $5 by July 4th. I remember people on this board taking amazing pride in there SUVs. Well done you bought a nuclear program for Iran. You also bought a couple holes in New York. Reap it.

You actually fly airplanes? and then make a stupid statement like that. you think SUV's are the cuase? look at your airplanes fuel burn, trucking, shipping company's and the gas comming out of you stupid ass.

I put on maybe 5,000 miles a year in my suv, now compare that to my neighbor who puts on 40,000 miles a year in his car. which is worse. dork.

Well the airlines could be making money too. All they have to do is charge more than it costs to produce their product.

Peak Oil paranoia is only true as applied to Cheap Oil. There is plenty of oil out there for the time being, but it's more expensive to extract. Not to mention, the political hurdles that must be over come.

I heard and read on the news today that Shell Oil is going to build the largest refinery in the world in Port Arthur, TX (Sean Hannity), and that Azerbijan (sp) is now joining the world oil market with its reserves. Piping through Turkish ports. (WSJ)

ANWaR has tons of it. The continental shelves off of CA and the Atlantic coast has lots. Environmentalists. There's more to be had off of the Gulf Coast of FL, but Jeb lobbied against it. Canada. Don't really need to say much there, but for the first time EVER petroleum flowed southbound to Houston from Canada this month. Cost and environmentalists.

Don't panic. Conserve. Search for suitable alternatives. IMO, present day hybrids are a scam. I'd rather ride a horse. Buy a motorcycle, bicycle, golf-cart, whatever. Mass transit where applicable. Buy a smaller (more efficient) house. There are a million ways around this, and as consumers, we have lots of power.

i am not for bigger government, but this is a time where it might be time for the government to nationalize the energy companies, since they are raping our country. Do a quick nationalization, let the share holders keep their shares at current prices and markets etc, but slap a government pay scale on all those people who are working for those companies.....and jail the current CEO's and board of directors!

That sounds great for an airline, but I doubt the boneheads that run this country could manage a shoe store, much less an oil company. If you want more government control, elect Hillary. She can spend your money much better than you can.

My support for President Bush has been slowly fading over the last year or so. I'm all in favor of his foreign policy, but domestic policy has been a dismal failure. This is yet another example of horrendous domestic policy.

you must be kidding....why are we at war....yeah, thats right to fight terrorists....now wait.....to make democracy in a place which if a vote was taken...they would vote to hate americans......no wait, we are at war to stop weapons of mass destruction.....then why did we not invade north Korea......or india? wait, i believe it has something to do with oil and power.....wait...you seem to think that oil prices and those execs who have raped us are not all connected......bush war, oil and executive raping are all connected......

You're pretending to be an idiot, right?

The only reason we have ANY energy at all is because these EVIL companies are willing to risk billions of dollars on future production; their only barrier is government regulation.

When was the last oil refinery built in the US?

How about the last nuclear reactor?

Do you think that THESE facts have anything to do with our current problem? Or is it simply greedy fat white guys who must be punished?

When will anyone look at the tree-hugging environmentalists and point out that they are part of the problem as well?

Don't feel like reading one of the long descriptions of what PEAK OIL is?

Wanna learn about it from listening?

Matthew Simmons has been on Fox News for the conservatives and CNN for the liberals and CNBC for the business oriented folks talking about Peak Oil. He was an advisor to Cheney for the Energy Policy.

Jim Puplava on his FINANCIAL SENSE NEWS HOUR radio program just had Matthew Simmons on as a guest.

Listen to the U.S. Govt. Department of Energy Expert Robert Hirsch and Republican Congressman Roscoe Bartlett talk about peak oil on April 24th:

http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze4gqr9/audio/audioindex.htm

The first thing Robert Hirsch says is "Peak Oil is NOT a theory. It is a fact. The question is when will it occur."

They just want us to be preemptive so the effects of declining oil production will be no big deal because alternatives will have time to take the place of declining oil.

He says if we're not preemptive by many years we will have a bad economy for a long while. What's wrong with being preemptive to avoid a bad economy?

This is NOT a wolf crying event. NOT a chicken little event. This will happen in our future. Sooner? Later? We don't know.

Nobody has replied to my post of the Dept of Energy expert's and Republican Roscoe Bartlett's speech. No bashing. No name calling. I'm surprised.

Robert Hirsch's description of what effect declining oil production can have and why replacing oil will be so hard is very enlightening.

What did you guys think?

All you "big" oil basher, answer me this.

From USA Today last week, the profit margins for the oil companies was between 6 - 8 %, McDonalds was 12 %, Microsoft was 31%. If you don't like oil companies making a profit why are you using Microsoft software on your computer. Aren't they a "big, evil" corp?

Also how many of you own oil stocks, wether directly or through a mutual fund?

If you're really mad sell your stock and car and anything else that is made from oil? Put your money where your anger is. I know you'll say " That's impossible".

For me, I'll still drive my SUV with pride and not bit^h. I bought the beast and the price for a full tank is one of the consequences.

Cause everyone is tired of your lame, doom-and-gloom Peak Oil whining. Meanwhile, I've got several good quotes from you, I'll drag them out in 5 years when it's obvious you were wrong...

How can you say that driving an SUV doesn't matter. How many people in the US drive SUVS? If all of those people drove fuel efficient cars do you know how much fuel would be saved. Unfortunately buddy we don't have a choice of how fuel efficient our aircraft our. They guzzle gasoline either way....

I have two SUV's and two mini-vans. I won't give them up until they pry the steering wheel from my cold dead hands. Let's drill in the gulf, off the coast of CA., and in Alaska. Then let's use up Arab oil and render them powerless in the world.

You my friend are an idiot. I for one hope the price of gasoline reaches 10-15 dollars a gallon then we'll see how fast you get rid of them retard

The price will go up as high as the market can handle, no more and you can bet your Hundai, no less. The sky is not falling, the ceiling is just not as high as it used to be.

What pisses me off about the price of oil is that the oil companies get a percentage based profit and everyone thinks that is OK. For example if oil is 50 bucks a barrel they get 4% or 2 bucks to turn it into gas. If it is 500 dollars a barrel it would be 4% or 20 bucks to turn it into gas. Yet it doesn't cost them a cent extra to make it. Pure profit of 18 dollars for nothing.

It is in their interest for OPEC to raise the price of crude. And that is OK? WTF? It shouls be a flat rate per gallon because that is what it costs them. Of course these guys are in record profits. That will never change as long as they mark it up a on a percentage basis. They can never, ever lose money. Never. Oh yeah, and they get tax breaks for this as well.

Grinder.

What that I have said has been doom and gloom? I've said that at the worst we'll have "hard economic times" Are you afraid of a recession? Are you that big of a puss, ya frickin' lame ass tard?

Yessssss. But we do have a choice in what we drive. Love it. Hate it. I for one would not give up my ability to choose so some guilt-ridden, sorry-for-being-born-in-America, everyone-should-be-like-me-because-I-CARE, useful idiot can sleep better at night. Take every single automobile off the planet and you still have the same problem due to energy production. SUVs are simply an easy target.

You clearly don't remember the late 70's and early 80's. Yes, the price to produce can be constant, but when the cost per barrell falls low, it can actually cost the company money to produce the gasoline, as it did before. Government price regulation is never a good thing in a free market economy.
