Hey everyone, I hope you can shed some light on this.

I am currently working with an Air Force Reserve recruiter for a UPT slot in the reserves. I've gathered that its probably better to be sponsored but he does not seem to think its that big of a deal.
Whats the real story?

Also, a friend told me to apply to several units in both the ANG and the AFR simutaneuosly to increase my chances of being picked up by one. The recruiter told me this was not really possible and that if I did do it, it would probably piss someone off higher up such as in the selection board. Is this true or is he saving me for his quota?

Lastly, I am from WI but I am temporarily living in LA. I understand that some face time is important but because of travel expense, I feel that I may be able to make only 1 short trip to the units I'm interested in, WI and SC. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks,
reluctant about recruiters

If thats what the recruiter told you then his is greatly misinformed or just stupid. The guard has nothing to do with the reserves when it comes to hiring. The two never talk to each other about that stuff unless maybe you have been hired by one then try to go to the other. nor will you piss anyone off, in fact I can't tell you how many pilots on the hiring boards Iv been to that will encourage everyone to apply to units everywhere in order to increase your chances cause they know its tough to get into just one unit. You may want to only ese the recruiter for paperwork and thats about it. Apply to everything that interest you. I have a buddy apply for ANG, AFRES, Acive duty, and NAVY and had no problems in the application process. Good luck

Thanks stlpilot, any more help or advise you have is greatly apprieciated!

Going in sponsored will almost ensure that your package will get approved. However, given current/continuing global "tensions" and the shortage of military pilots, going in unsponsored may work as well.

I have heard the same myth about not applying to other units as you have heard. However, it is just a myth. The interview panel who interviewed me actually liked to hear that people were considering other options. They said it showed a certain sort of professional aggressiveness. I told my interview panel that they were my first choice, but if I was not selected, I did have a list of other units to which I wanted to apply.

Also, "face time" is invaluable. However, it's not always possible. The unit that is sponsoring me is in NJ. I live in AZ. The only face time I got was during the interview. If money is an issue and you can make only one trip, then I'd suggest holding on to it until you are invited to interview.
