How many of you in high school, college, or your new regional or major job came into work allittle hung from the night of iniquity before? I know some of us made mistakes thinking at the time we weren't making a mistake, thinking that possibly we were sober enough and legal enough to complete the mission. Who has done that? Could have been taking non-FAA aproved drugs too. Tell us your story so that others can get the wiser.

Drinking

Never, ever during my flying days. I remember a couple of times we had drinking bouts, but there was never any flying the next day. I recall a couple of times having maybe one the night before, but always at least twelve hours before any flying. This was before I started flying full time.

Now, if we're talking about drinking during college days, that's a horse of different color, and long before I knew much about airplanes - not that I indulged as heavily as some and/or as many times as some . . . . .

I've come to work hung many times. But never to work where I'll be taking hundreds of people aloft. I hope they get what they deserve.

Just might clear one more spot for the responsible ones.

I never have, and never will. I limit myself to 24 hours bottle to throttle. I'm not going to risk my career or people's lives for a shot of scotch.

I've been out the night before a flight, but always gave myself at least eight hours, if not more. Some mornings I have felt the aftermath but never to the extent that would hinder my ability to fly safely. When I know i'm flying the next day, I won't drink to the point of being sh*t faced. No night of partying is worth screwing up my career for.

You could have very well been in violation on some of those. It is quite easy to be over .04 eight hours after even if you don't feel sh*t faced. Also any effects of the night before makes you ineligible. As little as .01 makes you ineligible for flight duty, .04 makes you illegal and the resulting mandatory legal repercusssions.

I am not sure I agree with this statement. The rules say 8 hours or .04. That means eight hours prior to flight. . . no alcohol. If more than the eight hours have elapsed, then you go to the .04 rule. Did you get so loaded you have more than .04 in your blood still? NO FLYING. Now, where does the .01 come from? Does this possibly come from an ops manual somewhere?

I guess mypoint is that if you have a few drinks on an overnight and go out get a little buzz, fine, just wait your eight hours plus and all will be fine. Save the heavy partying for days off.

OK. I was off by .01. We are talking about commercial operations here right? That means you are governed by Part 121 App J - Alcohol abuse/misuse testing program. Even those operating sightseeing flights (except the normal exempted commercial operations). In particular section III, D - Random Testing - a pilot, in this case, must be removed from duty between .02 - < .04 and can not be allowed to return to duty until below .02. At .04 you are violation and then it becomes a legal procedure. Every new hire is supposed to be educated on the alcohol and drug program prior to any training or duty. Perhaps a refreasher is due.

I don't drink alcohol. Period. (That doesn't mean I'm not a fun guy, though, does it?) I would dearly, dearly love to be accused by some obnoxious security nimrod, then blow a 0.0%.
