I could've made this a poll...but I know how y'all feel about those...
Which is the better burger, White Castle or Krystals?
One of the good things about polls is you can limit the responses. If you want to include In-n-out and Whataburger, you can. If you want to limit it to the Hot Fresh Small Square varieties, you can.
Although your mileage may vary considerably depending on the particular franchise you visit, how skilled their burger chef is, how fresh the bread is, and how recently the burger has been prepared, I believe on average Krystal outranks White Castle.
That's not to say that I haven't had a bad Krystal - - it's a travesty to humankind. And it's not to say I haven't enjoyed a White Castle from time to time. The biggest difference, really, is the condiment that Krystal includes as standard equipment and that White Castle doesn't seem to appreciate - - mustard. Krystal includes a good ole' plain cheap mustard to compliment the flavor, whereas White Castle will NOT put mustard on the burger. If you ask for mustard, you'll get little plastic packages of some kind of premium grey-poupon-esque mustard, which more resembles horseradish than mustard. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's not appropriate for these delicious burgers.
What makes either of these delicacies worth stopping for in the first place? The way they're prepared. The burgers are grilled on a bed of onions, and the buns are steamed over the grilling burgers. The flavor experience is unmatched in the burger world.
Oh, and another reason to prefer Krystal over White Castle??? The next time you get a White Castle, peel the bun up and take a look at the patty. You'll see that five bits of the meat have been removed - - like the dots on the five-side of a die. I can only assume that these are removed as a cost-savings strategy, as the patties USED to be complete, just as Krystals still are today.
Both Krystal and White Castle have frozen versions that you can buy in grocery stores and reheat - - both are horrible, and don't deserve the brand names of either.
Which do I choose to eat? The one that's in town. Krystal in the South, and White Castle in Yankee country.
