So...I downloaded a word document on ILS/PRM, LDA/PRM and SOIA ops. just to see what the required training would be for pt 91 in GA planes (non-transport category).

Has anyone else read this? If so, the way I understand it, the "required training" would be to just understand the ILS/PRM and LDA/PRM approaches outlined in the AIM.

so....does that mean there's no "structured training" for pt 91 ops?

Anyone from the FAA on the board care to chime in?

I'm just wondering if there's any paper I'd have to have with me or a note on my certificate saying I'm authorized for PRM/SOIA stuff.

Thanks for following along so far, because I just really confused myself writing that. If you have any info, I'd appreciate it.

Correct. There is no "structured training" under part 91. Read the AIM and you're good to go. There's also a video from the FAA that takes about 20 minutes to watch and does a pretty good job of explaining everything that's going on. (I'm guessing it's available on their website for download as when I watched it, we just had a copy on a burned CD)

There is nothing you need to document, just hope that you don't screw up since you have nothing to verify you recieved training. That said, the part 91 department I fly part time for has everyone watch the FAA video and then the cheif pilot gives you a logbook endorsement saying you watched it, but the endorsement has no legal authority.

Cool. Not sure how much I'd actually use a PRM approach...but it's nice to know I just need to read the AIM and watch a video.

Thanks!

Open your Jepps to the airport in question and read the 11-0 page titled "attention all users" this pretty much outlines the info and I believe counts for training the same way the airport overview pages do. In other words, read it and you're good. It has the same info as teh FAA video minus the graphics and without the porno soundtrack. :D

I don't know about other air carriers, but we have annual training on them, and had to simulate a breakout in the sim. It was real gay, and in 3 years I have'nt shot one. What a waste of time. I don't know about SFO, but in MSP, they don't use them much I am told.
