Simple, set the FAF in your GPS and fly the best mock glideslope you can do after crossing the fix...so what if you land halfway down the runway on centerline, at least it isn't the side of barn silo. You can use your groundspeed and interpolate a descent rate off the ILS approach plate.

Sure...if you've got one of those fancy shmancy GPS thingy-doo-dads...

ATC is actually required to turn them on for you. It's in 7110.65.

That's cool, I'd love to see Minneapolis center turn on the lights at Sheboygan or Manitowoc for me. That would be cool...I'll ask them to do that on my next ILS.

What do they do, dial a phone number and then use a touch tone phone menu or do they just type a few key strokes into their computer an "viola!"?

You win!!!! LOL, I was reading the ATC guide (or something like that) and I thought it was an intersting point. I never thought about turning on lights when you lose your radio. Pretty cool though.

Now if I can only figure out why a transponder only goes up to number 7.

I would like to know the technology with which ATC uses to turn on the lights at the non-towered airports that I list as destinations...all of which have scheduled 121 operations.

Maybe they call an airplane in the area to start keying up the lights. Like when the use another airplane to broadcast a message to someone else that is out of their radio coverage.

So the ATC'r's from WV can give out codes using their teeth to remember the numbers...it's very simple.

Atlanta Center's Don Brown wrote a two-part article on loss of communications. The quote below from 7110.65 was in that article. You can read the entire article at the following URL. The lighting is discussed in part two.

http://avweb.com/news/columns/189785-1.html

From 7110.65:

10-4-2. LIGHTING REQUIREMENTS

a. EN ROUTE. At nontower or non-FSS locations, request the airport management to light all runway lights, approach lights, and all other required airport lighting systems for at least 30 minutes before the ETA of the unreported aircraft until the aircraft has been located or for 30 minutes after its fuel supply is estimated to be exhausted.

b. TERMINAL. Operate runway lights, approach lights, and all other required airport lighting systems for at least 30 minutes before the ETA of the unreported aircraft until the aircraft has been located or for 30 minutes after its fuel supply is estimated to be exhausted.

Because it operates on octal code which only uses 0-7

The secret to my sucess it my custom transponder that goes up to 11

Man, I thought we were going to bash “embry-RIDDLE”

Wow, 10 posts to turn a somewhat decent conversation into another Riddle thread....if you want to talk smack about riddle, do a search for a thread with that topic...there's enough of them

ILS? We don't need no stinking ILS. (That's what those high dollars FMSes are for. :D )
