 Question.

Traded in ASEL Commercial for an ATP on my last 135.297 ride. Fed was nice enough to offer it before we started.

I now possess an ATP, not a commercial certificate. Do I now need to maintain a First Class Medical while operating with this ATP - - EVEN when conducting operations which require only the Commercial rating (ie. single-pilot, single-engine, IFR, 135)?

Anyone familiar with this scenario?

Just crossed my mind while discussing medicals with a student tonite.

Help

Thanks

No. You would need the first class medical to exercise the privileges of the ATP certificate. If you are performing the duties of a commercial pilot, a second class is fine.

You did not trade in your pilot certificate. There is only one pilot certificate. That pilot certificate may hold private, commercial, and even ATP privileges. All you did was upgrade your privileges. You still hold the same certificate; a pilot certificate. You simply hold higher privileges.

You still hold all the former privileges of your commercial; you still hold your "commercial."

As Quillpig stated, a first class medical is only necessary when exercising ATP privileges. As there is only one pilot certificate, you may exercise the privileges of that certificate without a first class medical, so long as ATP privileges are not required for the assignment.
