Our plane will be done in a few weeks!!! I havent flown for 2 months from today. After the plane is done im going to spend about 4-5 days just flying around. Im going to head out from CA, make stops in NM, TX, LA, FL, GA, SC, VA, NY and head back stoping in OH, IL, KS, CO, AZ, and back to CA. Any tips on doing this and what to bring? Mostly it will be on a IFR flight plan in the east. There is going to be 2 of us, a friend of mine is a CFII and he wants to go. Where can I rent a O2 bottle for going over the rockies? Is it going to be hard to get around NY? What about fuel prices back east, how much is it? Also well were down in FL we might go down to the keys. Any tips on going over the water in a single? I know its not going to be far, but once your over the water something doesnt sound right or feel right.

thanks for the help

Tony,

I would stop at ABQ, Santa Fe, and Farmington while going through NM. If you are into photography then you will be in heaven since there is quite a bit to do and see from both in the air and on the ground. Speak to your fbo, they should be able to hook you up with the 02 so you can rent it versus having to buy it. Sporty's and others are somewhat pricey to purchase them outright.

Go to TEB and use JET there, great place although not cheap...

What part of CA are you leaving from?

Senor Pepper's, if it's still on the airport in FMN, is a good Mexican restaurant. Don't forget to look at Shiprock. If you have to stay in Farmington overnight, I'd recommend the Holiday Inn. It is decent; the other hotels in Farmington are fleabags. I never went into Durango, but it's only about ten minutes away and is supposed to be nice.

I don't know if lightplanes can still land at PHX. You still might be better off going to SDL or DVT. You might enjoy PRC, but you'll have to wedge your way in between all the Riddle airplanes. Nancy's Restaurant, if she still owns it, has decent food.

Enjoy your trip!

ABI has the best steak in the world. I mean absolutely best. They'll let you have a crew car. Tell them you want steak. You will regret it if you don't go there. Also, the view is spectacular.

I disagree, a bit, millionair at TEB is cool. Don't know about JET. Use AirNav, www.airnav.com you will save tons on fuel costs. They'll do rudimentary flight planning for lowest fuel.

DAL is a hoot to fly into. Turn to final over downtown. RBD is cheaper, but DAL is coolest. If you go to DAL, go to Regal Aviation. They'll treat you like a king.

Going back, stop at TBN. It's cheap fuel, instrument approaches, they'll run you up to the cafeteria. It's on FT Leanord Wood. Army base. Way cool. They shut down the firing range every time I go in.

Im leaving out of apple valley KAPV in the High Desert about 100 miles east of LA. Well were down in FL we are going to check out Air Ben for the multi time and fly back that away after the first of the year. It sounds like alot of fun, I cant wait. Any places in the north east we should check?

When coming through KS OJC is a good stop. There are some nice eats around. CC broiler's is a exellent steak house. OJC is also about 30 minutes from down town kansas city. Some really good eats down there. Forgot to mention the best hot wings around at the Peanut. Hands down.

Down in FL I flew into LAL. Nice airport & some good eats. Going through MS, gulfcoast GPT is a decent airport. (about the biggest there). Your about 15 - 20 minutes from the Cosino's there in Biloxi. It cost $15 or so for tiedown. But the FBO is a good group of people.

BHM is a big airport w/ some heavy iron that flys in. I didn't find many eats, but there is one joint just out side the perimeter fence that had good food.

Hope any of this helps.

Kansas

Depending on your timing if you need a stop for fuel in KS UKL is currently $2.14 on 100LL (that includes tax). However if you need a motel Burlington is not on the 5-Star list.

LBL and FOE have air museums.

HUT has the Cosmosphere which I’m told has the most space artifacts in the country? They also have a great steak house on the field.

TOP has a decent restaurant on the field, so does STJ (St. Joseph MO).

Beaumont Hotel (can’t find an identifier, about 50 miles ENE of Wichita) is a cool place to stop. They are famous for their fried chicken. It is a short grass strip and after landing you taxi up to a road to the hotel and the cars must yield to aircraft.

There were several B-29 training bases during WW2. One is being restored by Boeing retirees in Wichita and GDB (I think) has a memorial. (I wouldn’t stop just for that tho)

That’s what I can think of in Kansas at the moment. If you have any questions feel free to ask & I’ll tell you what I know.

If you fly through AZ during the day, you must not miss stopping at Sedona. I guarantee that it will be the most memorable airport of your trip....there's an excellent resturant right on the field and the scenery is some of the most beautiful in the country.

Enjoy.:D

Sedona? He'll be flying near Los Alamos, NM--and it kicks Sedona's butt. not to mention he won't have to worry about being caught up in any of the vortex's, unless of course he has the crystals to focus them...

Just be prepared for some serious weather delays. There's been 2 inch hail for hours on end just east of ABQ for the past few days...

Take pictures! Have fun!

Va

Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay in VA is a nice little airport to stop at for a bit. Also Bay Bridge (W29) in Md is nice as well. Its right beside the Chesapeake bay bridge and there is a place you can grab a bite to eat right across the street. As far as the FL Keys Marathon is ok. There was an FBO there I think it was called Grant or something like that. Anyways I stopped there with a buddy a few years ago and the owner was a real dick and I said I would never go back. At EYW the FBO is called Island Air services and I've dealt with them many times and they have always had great service. For 8 bucks you can get a cab and make it pretty much anywhere on the island. Duval street has alot of places to eat. If you are that worried about flying over the water in a single you could go down by MIA and then follow the keys all the way to Key West. In the day the view of the keys is pretty nice. I've done the shortcut across the water and I didn't think it was too bad. You can at least pretty much see land the whole time.

Sedona and elsewhere

Not to mention that landing on that field is like landing on an aircraft carrier!

Beware, though. Traffic lands one way and departs the other.

Another place to check out is Lake Havasu City. London Bridge in the middle of the desert is an interesting sight.

My Mom and Dad lived in Havasu for 10 years or so and we have alot of fam that still live there. We always go there for motorcycle races
