Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe it's when the n1 won't go past a certain percentage???? Also, what would be the cause of a hung start?

Thanks!
Nick

It's N2 that usually hangs up, resulting in N1 hanging as well (since N2 drives N1). A lot of times it is caused by attempting to start with an excess tailwind, or if say the air source (APU or Start Cart) kicks off prematurely during the start process.

I've heard of people leaving engine covers on (accidentaly) and sucking them in.....causing a hung start. Also heard of fan blades icing over and upon start up....the turbine spins but the fan wont......again causing a hung start.\

I've had 2 actual hung starts........one with Mx on board for first flight after hot sections replaced by Pratt.........they deemed the cause "air in the fuel line". The second one was on the road. We disengaged and tried the other engine....started fine then tried the one which hung up and it fired up fine. No problems if you catch it right away...but I've watched many a guy put on his seat belt or program the box while firing up and one day they'll get bit in the a$$.

I'm sure there are some good (or bad) stories out there.

start malfunctions

The Hung Start is a malfunction shared by both air and elec. starter/Gens. Early in a start it might be a air or elec. issue. The only time it has ever happened to me it occured in a elec start/gen and did so well in to the start +30%, fuel flow and acceleration was the issue.

Dont know if that helps ....

Hung start on the dash8 is usually caused by the second set of injectors not kicking in, or the igniters shutting of prematurely.

Well, I'm still learning stuff so I guess not. <bg>
Convair 340? KC-97??? What are you, a hundred years old?

(And I mean that in the nicest possible way...)

73. You get that way by following the rules. <bg>

I had 8 years in the USAF and 32 years on the airline. My how time flies.

Hung start: when you’re doing an air-cart start because the APU is inop and the air-cart cough’s and quits … hung start followed by a memory item.

Typhoon1244, where did you get that quote?

Not to hijack the thread but is there a world record for flight hours accrued?

Several yrs ago I believe I read some guy logged 57,000 hrs. This was in the Gunnness Book of Records if I remember correctly.

Don't know about the guy, but she's quite something:

"Now, Ms. Bryan Johnson has considerably more hours than that-57,567 and still counting. "The Guinness book says I have more flying hours than any woman in the world, but a man who died about three years ago had more time-64,000 hours. I'll never catch thatl But I do have more hours than any other living person."

Geeze donsa you flew all the great classics. Lucky mofo......

And lived to tell about it, that is the best part. But you young guys, you will make your own history. Just enjoy it. I sure did and you will too.

I had 3 hung starts on a severly cold soaked/iced up engine in PHL a few weeks back. It was the first time for me outside the sim. The situation was the day after a big snow in PHL, mx had come out and used hot air to melt all the ice and snow out of the intakes, and verified that the N1 fan was rotating freely. We push and try to start, no luck. after starter cutout, N2 starts to decay and it slowly just starts winding down. We watch for a few short seconds, and shut it down. Checklist please. We move on to try the other engine, and she fires up fine. Consult Mx, and they say give it another try since no limits exceeded. It's their motor, so hey why not? Second attempt, same result. N1 hangs at starter cutout, with N2 decaying and temp stable around 400 C. Abort and checklist please. Consult MX, 'hey try a manual start, maybe both igniters are not firing'. Yeah but we are getting lightoff, it is hanging not failing to lightoff. Mx replies, try a manual start, same result.

Bottom line, they spent 1 hour with a start cart blowing hot air into the front, after that, it started fine first time.

Good grief Donsa320 got enough hours there?

Speaking of grief, do you know how many birthdays one would see getting that much time.

I do know a couple of crop dusters in there late 70's with that and more.

Oh, and bless you Donsa, you doing good.

Who did you fly for??

If that question was for me....USAF...1951 to 1959. Troop Carrier, Fort Bragg(Pope AFB) N.C., Rhein-Main AB Germany, Ashiya AB Japan. SAC Dow AFB Bangor Maine.
Civilian.... 1959 to 1991. North Central Airlines which merged to become Republic and merged again to Northwest. Retired 1991. Part time now at Midwest Airlines in Flight Standards and Training.

OK yeah I was thinking (by your profile) either that or something like Lake Central or Mohawk to US Air.

Take Care

Jobs were MIGHTY scarce in 1959. I was very lucky to get right on with NOR.

I see a lot of complaining here about advancement. I was in the right seat of DC-3's and Convair 340's for 8 years before upgrade to DC-3 Captain. Jeez. <bg>

Yah but the DC3 was one of those classics none of us here would mind being stuck in. Then again I wouldnt mind being stuck in most of those AC. Us as younger pilots get to look forward to automation taking over before we even get close to as much flying as you have, as well as decrased pay and morale.

Hung start is just that, acceleration has stopped and it is hung below predetermined values. Usually the EGT starts a rapid rise if left in this conditon too long.

I suppose it depends on the engine. I had a PT6A hang and it just chilled at about 38% N1, cool as a cucumber at 500C ITT. Just let it go for about a minute, hoping and praying for the secondary spray pattern to kick in, before surrendering.
