I once knew of a web page that would allow you to see all flights in real time around the US by airliners. Just wondering if there is a site or a program that allows this but not just for airliners also for GA, etc.

I think it will only show IFR flights though right? how about VFR flights that file a flight plan?

I was always amazed at 2 things with this..
1.) How do these programs or webpages get this information
2.) whey in the world would the FAA allow something like this, I would think it could be a real security threat for potential bad people to know where all flights are in real time..

Well, you could download Flightexplorer at http://www.flightexplorer.com/, which costs about $9 per month. It has a number of ways to filter that allow you to determine what you're see. You could view all FedEx planes flying into Memphis, all Departures out of O'Hare, etc. I have a filter that shows me all aircraft originating and arriving into CDW, TEB, and other NYC area airports, no matter where they are in the country at the time . It also allows you to overlay highways, navaids, airways, tracon sector boundaries, and center boundaries, just to name a few.

I'm not sure whether it or any other tracking system shows VFR flights on a flight plan as the data is coming from the same place. Now if you have Flight Following and have been assigned a transponder code then you will show up if I'm not mistaken. As for security, the data available to the public is delayed by a few minutes.

why are some free and others pay.. who would pay if you get it for free?
Because you get what you pay for. I subscribe to Flight Explorer Personal Edition, and am very happy with it. fltplan.com is also very good, but I'm too lazy to figure it out.

The old free one was TheTrip.com

I use Flight Explorer now. Its not "realtime" as it has a 5 minute delay for security reasons. Not sure about the others.

The FAA sends a data stream from the Volpe Center in Cambridge, Mass. The programs read this stream and superimpose the data over whatever they're using to display the maps.

The stream itself is free, and if you're willing to sign a letter of agreement with the FAA, you can access the raw data yourself.

Hello,

Here are a couple free ones. (and no popup ads!)

http://www.flightview.com/TravelTools/default.asp - This one is nice because you can track flight history for the past few days. Very nice if you want to check your times or whatever.

http://www.flytecomm.com/cgi-bin/trackflight - This one lets you view all the arrivals or departs that are planned or in flight.

There are a bizillion others as well, but these two do pretty good. I use fltplan.com for viewing with wildcards (i.e. DAL*). But it is not a free site.
