What is the appropriate way to make contact with a buisness. I've noticed there are a lot of different type of pilots in here, does it differ from one type of job to another. We're talking low time entry level positions at smaller operations, do these people want to be called during the day, and bugged by some 22 year old punk in Illinois. I'm trying to be curdious, yet assertive at the same time. I feel just sending my resume to a place lacks a certain punctuation without personal contact.

I don't think I would make phone calls. First of all, you need a resume and a well-written cover letter. Both have to be perfect in every way. Any misspellings, grammatical or punctuation errors will likely be fatal. You can prepare a general cover letter that you can customize for specific companies. Be sure to ask for an interview in your cover letter.

You can hand-deliver your materials to places if they are within driving distance or even beyond. Dress nicely if you hand-deliver materials. If you cannot hand-deliver your cover letter and resume, there is nothing wrong with mailing them. Be sure you address your materials by name and title to the proper contact person. Be sure you spell the person's name correctly.

I personally don't like to fax cover letters and resumes because fax machines destroy the crisp appearance that you've striven to obtain. Moreover, many places may not like fax spam. Others will disagree.

After a few days, you can call the contact and ask if he/she has received your materials. You can then reiterate your interest in a job. Don't be surprised or disappointed if the receptionist always says the person is not available when you call and/or if your calls are not returned. Pilots are always looking for jobs, and there are never enough jobs. Just the same, you have to be persistent. It may take several tries before you can finally speak with someone.

some additional notes.

youre correct. make sure you spell the naems right! Fax machines arent very good at reproducing the letter quality, especialyl the paper quality that good nice resumes need.

however theres more...
every place lately is getting mountains of resumes...unless they suck. then they just have rolling hills of resumes. therefore the receptionists usually have instructions given to them about resumes and what to do about them and the calls too, and theyll either tell you right away the fax number, or give you some options. mail them, email them, and fax them. what ive been finding out is that they really want you to FAX it. to make sure it gets in the right hands. the cover sheet MUST have the chief pilots name or whoever is the most instrumental in the hiring. their name right up front so it goes straight to them. on some other threads here they recommend sending all 3 ways to make sure it gets there, also keeps your name present in the air for a few days straight. Think about it this way, you need to make sure the chief pilot, or the person that matters the most in hiring people sees your resume not just in passing, but picks it up reads it and then deals with it. just getting it put on another pile by the receptionist isnt the best thing. and then call a few days later, just to verify taht your resume did make it there. that they 'recieved' it. usually that takes the receptionist time and theyll either find out from the person that deals with them and makes them see who you are again...and usually theyll read it again if they have a minute afterwards. again keeps your name up. after that lay low. you've bothered them enough. oh yeah...the coverletter....mane not even a slight hint or illusion that who you work for now dosent have what you want. or dislikes. or anything negative. dont even say youre looking for more than what they (current/past employer) have...again that sounds negative. strong to the point. mus tbe a strong letter.
