I am looking to buy a pair of Telex Stratus 50-D. Are they as good as the Bose? What's you opinion of each? Flying a turboprop, how is the ANR?

Thanks

P2J

Quiter than Bose....but more hardware....heavier too but they were engineered to not have specific pressure points so the weight is more evenly distributed over the head.....I've test-flown them and they were great.....the ANR 4105's are just as good as Bose too...and a lot cheaper than even the 50-D's

Hey P2J,

You won't regret buying the Stratus. I used the Stratus 50-D for about 4 months in the 1900. They were extremely effective at cancelling all the airplane noise and I would highly recommend them for turboprop flying. Everytime I turned on the ANR, I would virtually forget that I was in a noisy turboprop. They made my days in the 1900 far more pleasant.

A few minor things I didn't like:
  • As you already know, they're bulky, but they do fold up well.
  • Although the weight distribution is good, they're still kind of heavy.
  • On cold mornings, those big ear seals against your ears feel like a couple of cold, hard rocks. (They warm up and get soft in about 5 minutes.)
  • For some reason, the right ear seal never quite worked as well (in terms of sealing my ear) as the left one. Maybe it's just my head. I sold the headset after leaving the 1900. Otherwise, I would have asked Telex for a new seal.
Those are small complaints about a great product. If I were doing the same type of flying again, I would buy another Stratus. After my experience with it, I really don't think I'd look at anything else, personally.

I've never used the Bose, so I can't compare them. But you have virtually no noise cancelling with the Bose if you don't have power. The Stratus works very well (better than most passive headsets) even without the ANR.

Lebowski

Lebowski is dead on. Especially in the Bose comparison. I have flown with the Bose as well. And I lost battery power with them during a flight, not fun. I worked for a aviation catalog and dealt with both the Bose and Telex guys. Both were great but when the Telex people let me try that 50-D I was sold. I ended up buying the ANR 4105 which I really like as well. When I was flying freight for Flight Express, they worked great in the cockpit, even when the batteries died. I would get a little over 40 hours from a 9 volt battery. My point from all of these ramblings is that the Telex products keep things nice and quiet even if you do lose battery power.
