It is simple, americans to not care about lights, sweet F/A's and glitter..(well not the ones paying 116.00 SFO-JFK.) They will pay the cheapest fares.

Especially when their company is paying for the ticket and the traveler can assume ownership of the air miles.

Its the top end too.

I love start ups, and the risk is worth it for me... risk after all = return.. /quote]

Well, I read this and had to respond. Almost every start up has failed since deregulation. Only America West, Value Jet (AirTran), and a very few small airlines have succeeded and even they have huge problems. Going with a start up airline does not equate to and equal return for the huge risk at stake. This is proven fact in this industry. You must be fun in Vegas! There is a sucker born every min as they say and sometimes it is best to take the safe route. The chance of VA surviving more than 5 years is tiny. The money they are flushing down the toilet everyday is insane and they like ALL airlines are bleeding to death in this current economy. If that seems like a fun risk for you..then go for it! But, the loads can be 100% and the yields can be strong.....they will still lose money. If they raise fares to cover the real costs today, they lose load factor and that equates to yield. So, until the price of fuel drops OR a few more airlines close the doors, it will never change. VA may be fun, sexy, and the cool way to fly today but, money always talks in this country and people dont care what the service is as long as it is cheap.

VA has a huge uphill battle and their costs are high as they continue to grow. I would be nervous working there but, I would take it day by day and enjoy it while it lasts. History is 98% against them.

Sounds like a Indy guy that wasn't offered a job!

I'd listen to flyiguy.

No, it sounds like logic. The only thing that will get ANY airline through this fuel/currency/economic crisis is CASH. No amount of hard work or cheap labor will overcome the crushing cost of fuel.

I've been a supporter of VA and, because I have friends at AirTran, JB and F9, I've been pulling for the LCC's to succeed. But I don't have a whole lot of hope these days.

Unless something drastic changes, I'm afraid the days of "air travel for the masses" will come to an end.TC

I dont think the LCCs are necessarily done. Most of the legacy carriers have been to BK once and some twice they have cut away as much fat as possible and emerged from BK with business plans based on $60 a barrel. There is no where left for them to turn with increasingly older almost defunct fleets, costs cut to the bone (reflected in there service) and an almost fairytale impression that merging will fix the problem.

You may recall only recently CO had the opportunity to merge with UA.CO took one look at UAs books and ran for there lives.

The legacies will not emerge from this new reality in one piece there no longer is the BK panacea.
