how many TSA background check

Hi guys,

I had to do a few months ago a TSA background check because i got a job with a learjet 135 operator and i am a greencard holder. For personal reason i had to leave the job. Now i have chances to get a new job with a 121 regional on a RJ. Do you know if i will have to do the TSA background check again, with the waiting and all the hassles it involves (fingerprints, going to the police station......), or one background is good enough for the rest of my career?

Probably not, one of the categories that don't have to includes those already qualified and current on a 12-5 aircraft. If you are still technically current on the lear you should be ok. Call them.

I had to get the whole thing to start my Instrument rating. American wife, daughter and whatever the next one will be. I pay taxes and I obey the law. I love this country and I sing the Star-Spangled Banner louder than anyone at the game. Get off my back and give me my $130 back. Should have been born 3 hours farther south.

I feel your pain, 7 hours West in my case! I'm lucky I had my ratings though and I only had to do mine for the airlines and last summer there was no fee. When did they start to charge the $130? That's ridiculous. Then you have to spit another $30 or so to the police station that does your fingerprints! I can't wait to take the Oath in 2006 :)

I was told that if you stay current (12 mon) you don't have to do the TSA background check again.
 
It has only been under the control of the TSA since October I think. I did a check last year, but that was with the Department of Justice. It cost me $45 for the finger prints, but that was all. The DOJ guys were nice, fast, and I really liked them. The TSA are the exact opposite. I got the check done in Janurary, it took them 6 weeks to process. I was grounded for 6 weeks! I'm at college for crying out loud. I'll have to continue flying into the summer semester to catch up.

PS: No body told me that the Inst. Rating was going to take so much brain power. I am exausted.

OK, a little more detailed then: Since he indicated to go from a Lear to a CRJ, he'll need inital Training in the CRJ. That'll be Category 1 and he needs another Backgroundcheck. Same goes for recurrent after 12 months, since you are no longer current in the airplane. But since you're already in the system it should be quicker than when you initally applied.

Basically the only exception from the backgroundcheck is, when you go for additional training in an airplane that you are current and qualified already, i.e. within 12 months of your intial T/R or recurrent.

I wonder if they would give me a discount if I buy five backgroundchecks right now... ;)

I see what you mean about going from a lear to a CRJ; but I thought that the category about being qualified stipulates that you don't have to if you are qualified on ANY 12-5 aircraft? Which in this case includes recurent, but would also include going from one jet to another?

No. The only thing that changes, when you are current and qualified in a 12.5K Aircraft already (=T/R, SIC qualification is not sufficient) is, you will be a Cat. 2 Background check instead of a Cat. 1. That shortens the period from 30 days to 5 days, and after 5 days you may commence training if you haven't heard otherwise from the TSA. But you will need a Backgroundcheck either way and you will have to pay...

The way I understand it (and my Training department), you have to go through the Background check every time you set foot in a Sim unless you are current and qualified in type for which there is the abbreviated and free Cat. 4.

So, to answer your Question: Yes. 130$ for the BGCheck, 30$ for the fingerprinting every time you go for recurrent...
