How many CFIs are there?

Does any entity keep track of how many CFIs are out there? Also, do they separate those into groups of those that are actively teaching, and those that are just renewing every two years to keep their certificate?

I can't remember where I saw this (probably my recent issue of AOPA), but 85,000 comes to mind.

Now, whether or not all of those 85,000 are active is another question.

Hope this helps. That number is a little discouraging for those of us are, or in my case, hope to be CFIs making a living.
