I had a conversation last week with someone who is 'intricately' involved with what is going on with the company and here is what he/she told me:
  • [1]Jonathan is considering stepping down as CEO but remain as Chairman of the Board.[/li]
[2]3rd quarter earnings will be just as bad as 2nd quarter earnings if not worse.[/li]
[3]The company is getting ready to drop its code sharing agreement with United. Hence the reason for the public letter to the CEO of United about CORA etc., investor conference calls indicating that Mesa is trying to work with United to fix the schedules, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Peter Murnane's presentation at the Merrill Lynch Global Transportation Conference saying that many of the pilots are leaving the company/UAX operation because of the schedules, etc. The company is putting its ducks in a row to shore up its case when the time comes.[/li]
[4]The rumor that Gulfstream Air was to buy Air Midwest was true. The deal fell apart when Mesa couldn't guarantee that the Air Midwest pilots would stay with the airplanes. The company is still actively looking for a buyer.[/li]
[5]The company is considering/exploring the idea of selling the jet operation to Republic or Skywest. No idea if Republic or Skywest would be interested considering if Mesa continues its current trend: routes, planes and pilots could be easily scooped up if Mesa fails in the next 6 to 12 months.[/li]
[6]Jonathan and Mike Lotz (see avatar) coming to the realization that Mesa might end up being a airplane leasing company to China because of what is happening to the company.[/li]
[7]Current attrition numbers continue, the company will be forced to cancel vacations within the next bid or too.[/li]
Bottom line he/she told me, was that pilots need to be looking at all their options and seriosly be considering different employers because there is nothing in the works in regards to a pilot retention program. Also, that section 6 could be very interesting because the company will be in some serious financial trouble (if trends continue) and will want major concessions from the union.

Just like all the other groups, the top 1/3 of the pilot group isn't going anywhere and will give concessions to save a sinking ship!

BTW, have heard several rumors regarding MESA being given it's notice by UAL. Problem is everyone, SkyWest included is having problems, so there is no obvious successor.

Major Concessions huh? How much more can they get from a pilot group that has to sleep on ply-wood on stand ups?

What are you talking about Skywest having problems? If united new what the H3LL they were doing they would take back their flying and properly staff it themselves!

Mesa just ordered 10 CRJ70s on July 3rd to be operated for United-check out the bombardier website. I doubt your "intractely involved" boyfried knows much.....

I believe the 700's are to replace 200's as per the United contract and this is in J.O.'s best interest since it will free up 200's for china and he gets a fat brokerage fee on each one he sends over.

I'm going to say in 156,267,032 minutes...

Which is actually..

2,604,450 hours..

or.. 108,518 days..

or.. 297 years..

So.. looks like my original guess was wrong...

I'll say... 641,956 minutes..

or..

10,699 hours..

445 days..

and with today being the 177th day of 07..

That leaves us with my final answer..

The 268th day of 2008.. Which just happens to be... September 24th.. A Wednesday.. at about 1:15am.. So.. actually.. it'll be September 25th.. A Thursday morning...

Yup.. September 25., 2008...

Thanks for bringing this one up. All the 'i heard from the pilot who works for....' rumors should be taken with more than grain of salt..

Mesa took advantage of the post-2001 pilot environment (really patriotic, right?) and became the bottom feeder for UAL. Like the $99-r/t ticket purchasing passenger, now UAL is complaining about quality of service.. Well, you get what you paid for..
There are ways to quantify intangible things like 'quality of life, working force morale, pax satisfaction' but everybody is concerned about the penny that they will be pinching..

Out..

You are wrong, this is where the mojors will start taking back their flying that thet gave to the regionals when times where tough, United will start hiring off of the streets again, and get rid of a lot of the regional flying. This is good news for all of us that did not aspire to be professional regional jet pilots.

I'd love to believe that, but where are the majors other than US ordering any new mainline airplanes smaller than the 737-900 or Dreamliner? My friends at UA say the hiring is to cover attrition at an already short airline, and they don't see any plan to actually run a domestic mainline at this point. Oldest 737-300s may be leaving soon, no narrow-body replacement in sight. Just don't see UA being that forward yet.

I don't think United/Mesa relationship is going anywhere south soon.

Mesa just ordered 10 new CRJ700 NextGen to operate for United Airlines.

Bombardier wins $334-million jet order from Mesa Air

Published: Tuesday, July 03, 2007

MONTREAL — Bombardier Bombardier Aerospace said Tuesday it has secured a firm order for 10 CRJ700 NextGen regional jets, worth $334 million US, according to the list price.

Arizona-based Mesa Air Group Inc. ordered the aircraft, which will be operated for United Airlines, Bombardier said in a statement. Two of the 10 jets are conversions from Mesa’s previously ordered CRJ900 aircraft.

Mesa, a regional flight operator, is the first customer for the NextGen version of the CRJ700, which seats about 70. All of the CRJ700s are built at Bombardier’s Mirabel plant.

In May, Bombardier announced new versions of the CR700, CRJ900 and CRJ1000 regional jets that are said to feature new interiors and lower operating costs.

A Bombardier spokesperson said the company has delivered 254 of the 266 firm orders it’s received for the CRJ700 – including yesterday’s order from Mesa. The last booked order for the CRJ700 came from BritAir, an Air France subsidiary, in fall 2006.
