I can remember reading an ad for United pilots in a flying magazine back in the mid 60's when I was still in junior high school - all they wanted was a private pilot's license. You had to pass some aptitude tests, but if you did, United would pay for the rest of your training. I guess those days are gone forever.
 
I heard a guy speak once who had been hired at United with just his private. He had been flying just for fun, tending bar full time when he saw the ad in a magazine and applied. United paid for his commercial, instrument and multi. He retired as a 747 Captain.
