So here is the deal...

I'm standing by my airplane and the Pax shows up 1 hour early( lucky me we are ready) except the flight plan will not be in the system for another 30 min.
We'll I whip out my cell to try to move up the departure and guess what FSS I get? The one in my state on the other side of the US. I have heard about this because of the cell phone carriers. Is there a direct line (not WXbrief) I could have dialed for the local FSS because I was using my cell?

Thanks for your replies...

Have you tried using http://fltplan.com to file your flight plans? It is a free service, works great since others who have flown from your departure to your destination previously have done the routing already, it gives you different fuel burns and ETA's for a variety of altitudes, you can customize your fuel performance, it will estimate your fuel burn to selected alternate (gives you a pull down list of closest legal alternates-part 91 mind you). You can't beat it for the price.

You can print all this out, and it will give you the local FSS phone number for your departure and destination airports, AWOS phone number at destination, along with Flight Watch frequencies for the different centers as your flight progresses. If you print out each leg of your flight, you'll have lots of the "all available" info regarding your flight on one piece of paper.

If I really do need the local FSS number, I'll use my cellphone to first call WXbrief and then ask the briefer for the local FSS number.

Allthough I've never tried this I guess you could call the center for the area that you are in. "The cellular Pilot" book/guide is a great tool that I carry with me all the time..........among other things it has the telephone numbers for ARTCC's in the USA. At the very least they could push your ETD up.

It dosen't usually matter if you depart early I've never had a problem getting a clearance even if I was an hour early. But thats just me Mr. Vegas.

Thanks for the info!

We have been using fltplan.com for all our trips. I did not realize there were phone numbers available on the long printouts. Apeman I hope you cut and pasted all those numbers. Thanks for the advice guys. I'll be better prepared for the next one.

Cellular Pilot lists approach agency phone numbers for every RAPCON/ARTCC governing primary and satellite airports as well as Towers'. Works after hours too when skeleton crew at FSS is deeply engaged in Wild-On and you can't get a soul on the horn.

Call the tower or RAPCON in the Cellular Guide or AFD (if you know wich agency is responsible for your airport). The ATC controller that will be handling your departure can pull your flight plan from the IFR system with your tail# and amend your departure time.

Accuquik lists the local FSS numbers on the first page of every state.

It shouldn't matter what FSS you are talking to. I live in NC, and was recently in Tahoe for a trip to Alaska, and since you can't file outside the contiguous US on fltplan.com, I called and talked to Raleigh FSS. They filed all my flight plans without any problems.

If you want to do this you have to get the local number. What is wrong with dialing the 800 #. I have a New Mexico cell number and I call WXbrief all the time no matter where I am. It always rings in ABQ but flight plan is always ready when we are.
