when i was flt inst. in MSN I got to watch the F-16 unit do a test flight profile after the plane came out of maintence. they would T/off in full 'burner accelerate in ground effect then pull straight up, climb until you couldn't hardly see them. very cool picture

With a burner TO, you aren't rotating and driving the tail downwards, you rather are simply pulling the mains off the ground. There's really no period of time where you are rolling along with an angle of attack; as soon as the wings see an AOA and the engines are even slightly pointed downwards, whoosh, you're going up. You need to retract the gear instantly to avoid overspeeding the gear mechanism, the acceleration is so aggressive.

Cool pic!

Very fun to do, as well. Apart from functional and operational check flights, you only get to do 'em on incentive rides. "Quick climbs" never get old!

I was out at Dobbins recently and got to see the F/A-22's doing that during test flights. Dobbins, Atlanta NAS, and Lockheed all share the same runway. The 22's would come out of Lockheed, often times unpainted, so they were yellow in color, which was also odd to see. They were also constantly escorted by an F-16. When doing the vertical climb after takeoff bit the 16 would already be in the air, flying over the runway. The 22 would release brakes, scream down the runway then head up. At the same time the 16 would go up. After not to long the 22 would pass the 16 in the climb. Awesome.

Pass a F-16 in the vertical? Man I gotta see that! next time I'm in ATL on a overnight I'll have to find a spot to watch (if they'll let the public) I know, I know I'm plane dork

...... without denting your @ss? Fulcrum (mains) seems pretty far forward on the Eagle for this rocket-man stuff.

I don't understand your question. With all the power available there, I can't see how you could ding the tail. That's not as spectacular as I've seen with an F15 either. I used to watch em roll down, pick the plane up a few inches off the deck, suck the gear up and rotate hard to vertical line and just accellerate straight up on burner.
